Went through half my fabric stash today and cataloged it.

now i have a calc sheet with all info i have on each fabric plus a handy tag attached to each piece, with a UUID and the most essential info on it.

Why do people keep kosher very strictly, but then take the car back home from the service? And is there a reason food served in the synagogue is parve (easier with the cookware probably)?
And: Shabbat Shalom!

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@shekinahcancook no, there is also, as far as I saw, no dairy in all the food. Only fish and veggies, and bread of course

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@shekinahcancook thanks for the explanation. It was kind of what I assumed but I wasn’t really aware of all the work that goes into keeping a kosher kitchen.

After a little advice please, as a not very practiced seamstress,
I have a blouse that I want to add a panel into the sleeves to make them a bit more roomy, if I unpick the seam how easy is it likely to be to add an extra piece of fabric.
Can anyone recommend any stitchers who might have online tutorials, I've looked but can't find anything really useful,
Thanks in advance 👍

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@DoubleTreble @sewing I think it would be important to find a similar fabric. Changing sleeves isn’t easy. If you want to add a piece of fabric that has the same width everywhere, you’d have to detach it a bit from the shoulder and also change the cuff.
Avoid that by adding a piece that gets thinner at the end, but that’s definitely a hand sewing job then. That’s not a common clothes alteration, adding new sleeves might be easier and there are tutorials for that.

@DoubleTreble @sewing 👍 I hope it all goes to plan

I’m seeing a concerning trend of webpages that are designed for dark mode only. They present light-text-on-a-dark-background all the time. There is no light mode. No respecting the user’s preference.

I literally cannot read white text on dark backgrounds. At least not more than a few words worth. It’s weird to slowly have more and more of the web become unusable to me.

Do better.

It’s super easy to provide both. We should all provide both.

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@schwa @jensimmons I'm not trying to be annoying, but light mode is an accessibility issue, too. Eye conditions are very diverse and some folks don't do well with contrast and a lot of light at all. (While writing this, I turned down my screen brightness to lowest. It is daytime.)

I like the security people at my workplace. Everything they do, they do it very sullenly. To every request they receive, they will tell you how hard it is on them. The amount of paperwork they have to do just so they can open a door for you, it must be like taxes, but five times as much.
But they will actually always help. They let you take your time. Fulfill any additional request you might have (while complaining, of course).

Hey there fediverse. I found this thing in with my mom's sewing stuff. There's only one, it has a slit in the end with the circle. Any idea what it is? A bobbin? Floss spool? shuttle?

@KarenDorman @sewing @crochet after googling tassel making tools, that seems totally possible

i read a big long tumblr post last night that drew a line straight through the various christian awakenings / enlightenment epochs on through modern culture and the general ubiquity of purity tests, where people having to say the right things, have the right takes on various topics, or else they're cancelled. basically this:

then:
"aha, look i am righteous, unlike those sinners over there. you know that i'm going to heaven because of my righteous behavior. you see, the world is clearly divided between the good and the bad, the righteous and the sinners, and here are my credentials as one of the good ones."

now:
"here is a fresh hot take, along with an acknowledgement of intersectionality, which I can use to underline my hot take, and also, uhh, land back!, and also punching nazis is good! i say the right things so i can't be one of the bad ones"

being the same process.
i don't know how i feel about it, but i'm still thinking about it 12 hours later

@shekinahcancook @blumenberg I actually love cold coffee? Add some sugar, maybe some cream, it's really good. And not unusual in some countries.

So. I wrote an e-mail to the hasidic-liberal synagogue two weeks ago. They didn't answer so far.

They have no public phone number (anymore), but active social media accounts, which I could contact.
Should I wait? Or not?

This might have been easier two months ago, and I'm afraid something might happen and it will become much harder. I could also send them a membership application, since they offer this publicly. I think it's weird though.

returning to this adventure ...
Religious communities are probably similar to other semi-formal group settings. Been doing volunteer work forever. Just, well, it was never very important to me. I don't do well in social situations under pressure.

hundertsieben,

They finally answered and invited me for Shabbat!! Just in time before I would've tried to go there in person and hope to meet some one. (excited in a positive and negative way at the same time)
Let's see how long it takes until they tell me what time I should come and if there's anything I should bring.

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

Ok ok. Trying to welcome the surprise. First Shabbat in February I will attend. Today would have been too little time to prepare myself mentally.
Oh no oh no oh no 🙈

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@terryb I live in a medium sized city in Germany. I can order something certified kosher, which I won’t, or not bring anything. Those are the choices.
They are meeting at the synagogue, so my question would also be if I should cover my head, but probably it’s ok whatever I do.

hundertsieben,
@hundertsieben@babka.social avatar

@terryb I‘m not against ordering something certified kosher, the thing is I don’t know how these products taste because the only I’ve found are canned. So I don’t know if I’ll like it, if anybody at the meeting will eat it, and it seems like a possible waste of food to me. I might do it in the future, if it makes sense. You can’t order freshly made kosher food here 🙄
I won't take food probably, unless they tell me I should.
I don’t know how orthodox Jews do it. Maybe avoid to live in Dresden (even though we have a small orthodox community here as well).
