For context this is my first Street Fighter game, I placed in rookie and somehow made it up to plat. I think it's because I was playing Day 1 and the ranks were just all over the place. Either way I'm stuck in plat now and the game refuses to demote me lol

Yea, what's with that? I feel like the game wants to demote me but i'm stuck at the level it first put me at. Granted i think it's mostly accurate as i only finished my placement matches ~4 days ago or w/e, so it's not a big deal. Still, i find it odd that i can't lose a rank.
I assume it's something to do with just showing your badge with "the highest rank i've achieved" - but wouldn't it still make sense to demote my rank that i'm queuing with? Seems odd, but fighting games and their ranking is new to me.
It's only for "lower" ranks, I think Gold and below, where you can't be demoted. Not entirely sure why, I guess it's to make sure that the lower ranks are only for actual newer players with little to no experience.
I was exaggerating my situation a bit, I can technically derank, I have just been getting lucky and the game is kind of forgiving so I've stayed at about the same place.
Yeah, day 1 rank was a shitshow. I avoided it but i guess the result of it still lingers even now because of match making issue. But climbing to plat day 1 in your first FG is no slouch, kudo to you.
You can be demoted to Gold from Plat but i guess there're a lot of others in the same sitution as your, so fighting them keeping you in Plat. And because the Match making keep matching you to the same pool of players, you're pretty much stuck, unless you're able to beat most of them in the pool.
Yeah I think it's pretty much how you described it. It's also that I get more points for winning than I lose so I maintain my rank even with a 45% wr.
It can be kind of fun seeing such large differences in skill level but yeah it'd be nice if they can get everything fixed soon.
I've heard several times that most people just want to hit buttons and do cool stuff, and you can win with safe play and punishment. It's a good point to winning, but it's hard to accept when I see top players not playing this way. It feels like I'm learning how to only play the average person. I guess that's something I'll have to accept until I can get myself good enough and high enough to play a more thoughtful match.
On the side, I think Sajam's doing a great job of trying to demystify fighting games for new players.
If you are playing ranked this style of play will quickly get you past the average person, and you will have a solid foundation to build on for more active games.
