In 2020, a contingent of Trump supporters used trucks and vehicles to form a "Trump Train", which harassed and endangered a Joe Biden campaign bus driving through Central Texas.
Fearing for safety, the bus operator requested police support. Except once it entered San Marcos (just south of Austin), the local cops refused to intervene.
Several travelers on the bus sued, claiming the city violated the Klan Act of 1871.
@oh_that_courtney ...only because it was Biden. There are several court rulings affirming that the police have zero duty to intervene if it were you or I that was in danger -- even if a court had issued a protective order...see Lozito v. NYPD or Castle Rock v. Gonzales.
If you've got enough wealth and power to make the cops regret it, they'll settle voluntarily (which sets no precedent). If you're an average citizen, they'll fight you in court and they'll win.
What the police did here is completely legal, they can do it to anybody and face no consequences, and this settlement only helps ensure that it stays that way. Biden could have fixed this problem but decided to take a cash payment instead. He could surely afford to fight for what is right...but instead he chose to take the money and run.
