All three of the top GOP candidates are anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia. Speaking as someone who fucking hates the GOP, it wasn't always like this. But Russian money corrupts.

Ooops,
Ooops avatar

I think it's wrong to claim that money is the reason. We simply need to accept the fact that they love the idea of an autoritarian state with all power in the hands of some incredible rich people. And that Russia was never an enemy, communism was...

JudahBenHur,

PugJesus,
PugJesus avatar

There's that too, but as late as 2015 the GOP was still largely anti-Russia.

yata,

Some of them claimed that they were, but they do a lot of lying, and the money stream certainly goes back a lot further than that.

Arcane_Trixster,

Their money isn’t worth shit since the invasion. Having no particular knowledge on the subject, i can’t imagine they’d be doing much bribery the last few years. These people are otherwise compromised, or what i think more likely, Russia just helped start the culture war fire, and we’re fanning the flames ourselves.

I doubt this charlatan gives a damn about Russia or Ukraine, he’s just being a contrarian because that gets you a sizable base of voters now.

PugJesus,

Man, they aren't paying in rubles, that'd be dumb as shit, even for Russia. Some of the richest people in the world are, and remain, Russian oligarchs with close ties to Putin - and most of their money ain't in rubles.

So many dead Russians and all Putin has to show for it is a failed coup, a collapsed Ruble, and a military that the world no longer respects. What a shame.

He could have said that, but he doesn't want to have a sound bite admitting that he's under felony indictment.

TropicalDingdong,

Trump is a moron who doesn’t know what words mean,

I mean, he may have used it correctly. We don’t really know about his interests in Russia.

A second amendment from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) that would have barred security assistance to Ukraine failed in an even wider 93-339 vote.

Jesus fucking Christ, 93 is still almost half of the House's Republicans. Are we really this compromised?

niktemadur,

And yet there’s still millions who sit on their oh-so-pure lazy asses on Election Day, fondling their purity then lovingly sniffing their fingers, mesmerized by the divide-and-conquer propaganda of “Don’t look over there! Look over here! See? bOtH pArTiEs ArE tHe SaMe! LoL aMiRiTe?”

Man, I hate that shit. It's like... I have so many fucking ideological and moral problems with the Dems. I can go on all day.

BUT

I can also name numerous Dem-led initiatives without which either me or people I know and care about would be quite literally dead. Dead. D E A D. Not to mention the suffering alleviated for us.

Would it be great if Dems weren't a bunch of spineless civility-politics milquetoast moderates more interested in keeping the status quo than improving society? Yes, definitely. Does that make them the same as the literal fucking fascists who want large swathes of the population to die, go into debt/wage slavery, and abandon all the ideals America was (however imperfectly) founded upon? Fuck no.

Might be that only 93 are dumb enough to make a pointless vote showing their allegiances. Congressional votes are rarely in question unless they're very close; parties communicate and coordinate for that very reason.

Burn_The_Right, in Republican senators demand that Biden immediately hand over ATACMS missiles to Ukraine

Biden is already sending them. The conservatives listed here are on-record opposing Ukrainian support. Now they are pretending Biden isn’t doing enough. This isn’t about helping Ukraine. This is just about inventing reasons to be angry at Biden.

Every word uttered by a conservative is deception or manipulation. It is not possible for a conservative to be honest. Never, ever trust the word of a conservative. Never.

correcthorsedickbatterystaple,

i dislike the idea that your political leanings make you untrustworthy (generally). i hold a number of positions that would be considered to be conservative. i don't feel that my political beliefs make me untrustworthy. being a member of the US Republican party shift things a bit, because the organization has shown that it prefers power over honesty so voluntary membership reveals a few things about you. but that's the party. the US Republican party i don't believe can be trusted, but having conservative leanings doesn't make one untrustworthy.

Transcendant,

Unfortunately, every conservative party I know of has gone full on batshit, so you can understand why people associate conservative supporters with that mindset. It must be hard to have genuinely oldschool conservative values right now if you’re not of the vast cadre of people who are only conservative because the shithead parties say what makes them feel good.

paddirn,

After the weapons arrive, they’ll start saying, “Why are we just giving away Americans’ most powerful weapons to Ukraine? They’ve already killed hundreds of thousands of Russians with our weapons. We should be taking care of our own people back home, not supporting mass murderers.” Meanwhile, they absolutely don’t give a fuck about people “back home”.

The US military could've done the job, but it's mired down by Republicans in Congress trying to fuck with Biden.

It is Congress ultimately, not the President, who controls the military via budget decisions and provides permission for the military to conduct kinetic actions.

athos77,

it's mired down by Republicans in Congress trying to fuck with Biden.

Not really. It's mired down with Republicans who want to do to the military what they've already done with the judiciary: keep the Democrats from promoting anyone so that the Republicans can stuff massive amounts of right-wing people in place as soon as they get a chance. Meaning that their next insurrection has a better chance of succeeding.

Fucking with Biden is just a bonus.

Givesomefucks,

Republicans have spent a literal lifetime sabotaging the government at any opportunity so stuff can be privatized...

That's already the alternative, we don't need to find one. We just need to go back to taxing the wealthy, and using that money for public services.

Internet should be a public utility, and all the money we give to SpaceX should have went to NASA where the government would have gotten a return on investment from parents.

People laugh at how crazy the predictions of the future from 1960 was, but if we kept funding NASA we might all have hoverboards and flying cars by now. We got a lot of really cool shit from just a decade of NASA in their hey day.

On the other hand... as we've seen... they very much can be that stupid...

mihies,

Nah, this is pro Ukraine, pro war industry (and pro Biden?) propaganda. Why would they fight NATO and more importantly with what means when they can barely manage to hold line in Ukraine.

pelya,

If they can be sure they can snatch ‘disputed territories’ like Transnistria, well, they will.

This war is highly political. Showing a small territory gain to the russian public is more important to Putin than any long-term consequences with NATO.

mihies,

Did you read the article? It talks like they will be marching to Paris or something. But even if it is Transnistria, how would they do that with Moldova's one foot in NATO and Transnistria positioned between it and Ukraine?

pelya,

Quickly and haphazardly, while it’s not fully in NATO. Using ‘local militia’ with russian passports, most probably.

Burn_The_Right, in Russia’s Medvedev threatens to nuke US, UK, Germany, Ukraine if Russia loses occupied territories

Call. The. Bluff.

Russia has been bluffing for decades. Neither their nukes nor their delivery systems work after 50 years of being “maintained” by notorious black market scalpers.

The end of the menace is possible. Call the bluff.

eran_morad,

Idiotic take.

flipht,

The take is actually grounded in history.

The US has notoriously bad spy craft when it comes to Russia. We spent literal decades believing they were an equal power, spending vast sums on defense to make sure we didn't fall behind. The government funded all sorts of "studies" but anyone who questioned the narrative got blackballed, and the people who kept getting that work just parroted back what the generals wanted to hear.

And then the iron curtain fell and the Berlin wall came down, and we saw the state of their military...and it was abysmal.

We are seeing the same thing with their basic war capabilities right now. Ukraine has been able to hold them off, more or less, for two years using mostly NATO cast off equipment and sunflower seeds.

There's a pretty good book that goes over a lot of this by Anne Jacobsen called The Pentagon's Brain.

Lividpeon,

Inspected and fully functional as of 2021 via the joint inspection program with the US that RU has since backed out of.

awwwyissss,

I don’t think those inspections were that thorough or comprehensive.

Burn_The_Right,

The inspections are to verify locations of warheads and delivery systems. They are not function tests. They do not verify fuel integrity, structural integrity, nav hardware functionality or any other critical function. They don’t even check that all the components exist in the delivery system.

These parts (fuel, computer components, chassis components) are all valuable on the international black market. The scalpers who have, for decades, been the main sources for these commodities have been the poorly paid people who maintain these systems.
