Kaliningrad Governor Blames Immanuel Kant for Ukraine War - The Moscow Times

The governor of western Russia's Kaliningrad region blamed the 18th-century German enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant for the outbreak of war in Ukraine. “He is directly related to the military conflict in Ukraine,” Anton Alikhanov, who governs the western exclave of Kaliningrad, said Friday at a local political science forum.

The categorical imperative (German: kategorischer Imperativ) is the central philosophical concept in the deontological moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant. Introduced in Kant’s 1785 Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, it is a way of evaluating motivations for action. It is best known in its original formulation: “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.”

That is, only do something if you are willing to have everyone else do the same.

Putin has frequently used historical borders to rationalize his brutal invasion, arguing that Russia has a claim over Ukraine even though Ukraine is an independent country.

On X, Tsakhia Elbegdorj, Mongolia’s president between 2009 and 2017 and its former prime minister, poked fun at Putin’s argument.

He shared maps showing how large the Mongol Empire was, with it once controlling parts of what is now Russia.

“After Putin’s talk. I found Mongolian historic map. Don’t worry. We are a peaceful and free nation,” Elbegdorj wrote.
