I have a question for people with and channels: what's your preferred viewer profile? YT + Patreon, YT Premium or PT + Patreon? How about people who don't have money and can only watch? Is YT giving you any money in those cases? I've been doubtful about watching on PT, because I don't support a lot of channel on Patreon, and I want to at least make people earn a few cents. /cc @janbeta @NoelsRetroLab @MoreFunMakingIt

@dmian I think of my videos as "free for all" so I don’t really have a preference about where people watch. I hope to make good enough videos for people to voluntarily support me (if they are able to, of course). YouTube ad revenue is not very significant per view, I think currently about 20€-30€ for 10000 views in my case. Patreon & KoFi are great ways to support video makers in my opinion, thankfully independent of the platform the videos are watched on. :)

@janbeta @NoelsRetroLab @MoreFunMakingIt Also: Is there a way in @peertube to subscribe to the channel where the instance gets a little commission to keep operating? Say I subscribe to @NoelsRetroLab channel, and a little part of it goes to @MakerTube to help them keep operating. That would be really neat. (And maybe there's a way, and I don't know it). This kind of things should be frictionless, to help PeerTube gain traction. YouTube is killing small channels...

@dmian I don’t think there is a "one click" way to do it, there is a donation link to support MakerTube and the links to support the video makers are separately presented by them. There’s no fee or donation necessary to subscribe and also no algorithm to speak of that pushes video recommendations on PeerTube. Completely different story on YouTube, every click, like, subscription furthers the video being recommended. PeerTube takes away a lot of the pressure to produce clickbait and such.

@dmian Which is a great thing in my opinion. Difficult to "monetize" and more focused on niche subjects and less "loud" content. Hope it gains some more traction in the future!

@janbeta Yes, of course I don't expect algorithms on PeerTube. My thinking is this: I see people more prone to subscribe to channels than help the platform directly. Or maybe, you can't give money to a lot of different platforms (for whatever reason). So I think it's fair that a little money is given to the platform (PeerTube instance) if I subscribe to the channel. I would love to have this option, but from my research this is not an option right now.

@dmian Can’t speak for the others, but I’m planning to set up a monthly donation for MakerTube soon. (Struggling a bit at the moment so I had to delay it a bit.) Maybe (hopefully) other video makers are doing the same. Kind of an indirect way to support the platform as a viewer, I guess. I’m really glad that there are people offering their PeerTube instances for free, definitely not cheap to run with those massive video files. :)
