I have a question for people with and channels: what's your preferred viewer profile? YT + Patreon, YT Premium or PT + Patreon? How about people who don't have money and can only watch? Is YT giving you any money in those cases? I've been doubtful about watching on PT, because I don't support a lot of channel on Patreon, and I want to at least make people earn a few cents. /cc @janbeta @NoelsRetroLab @MoreFunMakingIt

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@dmian I think of my videos as "free for all" so I donโ€™t really have a preference about where people watch. I hope to make good enough videos for people to voluntarily support me (if they are able to, of course). YouTube ad revenue is not very significant per view, I think currently about 20โ‚ฌ-30โ‚ฌ for 10000 views in my case. Patreon & KoFi are great ways to support video makers in my opinion, thankfully independent of the platform the videos are watched on. :)

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@dmian I donโ€™t think there is a "one click" way to do it, there is a donation link to support MakerTube and the links to support the video makers are separately presented by them. Thereโ€™s no fee or donation necessary to subscribe and also no algorithm to speak of that pushes video recommendations on PeerTube. Completely different story on YouTube, every click, like, subscription furthers the video being recommended. PeerTube takes away a lot of the pressure to produce clickbait and such.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@dmian Which is a great thing in my opinion. Difficult to "monetize" and more focused on niche subjects and less "loud" content. Hope it gains some more traction in the future!

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@dmian Canโ€™t speak for the others, but Iโ€™m planning to set up a monthly donation for MakerTube soon. (Struggling a bit at the moment so I had to delay it a bit.) Maybe (hopefully) other video makers are doing the same. Kind of an indirect way to support the platform as a viewer, I guess. Iโ€™m really glad that there are people offering their PeerTube instances for free, definitely not cheap to run with those massive video files. :)

Interesting fault: After playing around with my childhood C64 breadbin from 1983, the screen suddenly lost all contrast and went very dark. 1/3

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@ipaschke Interesting fault indeed. Iโ€™ve seen a couple of VIC-IIs fail in weird ways (mostly losing sprites or flickering or gradually starting to display random characters on screen) but this is a new (to me) way. Thanks for sharing!

New video! In the second part of the series, I'm trying to resurrect the Apple Macintosh Performa 630 Power Supply I found to have lots of leaky capacitors in the previous episode.

A bunch of power supply capacitor shaped capacitors arrived on the workbench.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@kylew01 You should definitely (have somebody) take a look at the psu. I read that the high pitched noise is usually the final symptom before the capacitors go bust in a violent way.

In other news, I just successfully (so far) repaired my toaster. Well, it seems the insides just needed a good cleaning and some contact cleaner on the switch & potentiometer. ๐Ÿ˜… Hooray!

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@yesterzine Nice! Not sure what actually caused mine to stop working, but there were a lot of larger crumbs and dust in there. Maybe one of those bits shorted something or maybe the "stop" tactile switch was a bit flaky. Works again so far thankfully. :D

Whoops! I missed my Fediversary! Two years on Mastodon on April 25th. I left that other site a couple of months later in November (if I remember correctly). Rightly so, it seems, as it turned into an even stinkier pile of garbage in the meantime. Haven't looked back. I love it here. Thanks for being great company, lovely retro (and not so retro) Fedizens! <3

Our fourth update of the year has been published today, where we've hit a magic 2,500 entries in our C64 archive since starting in 1999. Including a number of recent games that seem to have been abandoned and 24 other entries updated:
