@actuallyautistic
Is it a common trait to have the urge to share experiences?

Like as a kid coming from camping, I would give my mom a daylong report about all the things that happened in details.

Or know when I read something interesting I have to show it to my wife. Or when we meet after work I have to let out all the stuff that happened at that very second.

Tooden,
@Tooden@aus.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious It's common. Hubs, and #3 son are. Me, #1, & #2, aren't. Grandkids are a mix, too. @actuallyautistic

Cetraria,

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic When past friendship or romantic relationships have ended, this aspect has been one of the hardest parts - losing the person I dump the exciting parts of my day with. That's a vital role in my life.

@Cetraria @actuallyautistic
My wife and I agreed on that we never could break up, because we would need each other to deal with it. Thats a bit comically exaggerated, but has a deep true core in it.

Tooden,
@Tooden@aus.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious "If you leave me, can I come too?" @Cetraria @actuallyautistic

Cetraria,

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic Yeah, even through the hardest times, that's always in the back of my mind. These are the only truly supportive friendships either of us has ever had.

BoldMorning,

@actuallyautistic @Dr_Obvious Sort of? I don’t feel an impulse to share but if family or close friends ask how my day was I will talk for a long time until I finally finish relaying every brushstroke necessary to share with them the thought/impression of my day that I have mostly stored in one or two images or short videos in my head. I like that I can paint a clear picture. Hate that I can’t stop painting without finishing the picture. The urge is to finish my painting.

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic I also get this; it is both part of my impulsiveness and my inability to avoid interrupting, both of which stem from (I believe) from my . My Beloved autist barely speaks about such things, until it hits one of his areas of special interest.

Autistrain,

@Dr_Obvious

Yeah! I'm still doing it in my middle 30s. It was what did or saw when I was young. It's nowadays more theoretical things about what I read or saw outside. For example, I see cars and make a rant about urbanism.

Why we are doing this? It's to share our emotions and feelings to the person. I love you, therefore I will info dump about my domain of interest. I empathize with you through sharing a similar story.

Autism isn't a lack of anything or a deficit. It's a difference, and autists express themselves autisticaly. This type of expression is completely valid. It ends up with communicating our joy by sharing the last news, hobby, etc.

Some will share more details if they like the person. It depends on the person.

@Autistrain @actuallyautistic
Yes that varies definitely with sympathy levels.

Autistrain,

@Dr_Obvious
I was thinking this morning, I could add an example.

I like to share my emotions with pictures instead of saying or writing them. When I'm hiking or simply outside, I take pictures with my phone and send them.

Another quite similar manner is to take pictures of what the person like and send the picture this person. I can express with it that I thought about the person.

Now, it's nice to realize how we express ourselves. It's even better if we explain it to the people so we know we will be understood.

I will never wait for anyone to express themselves in the exact same way than me. I will respect their personal expression. The mutual respect is important.

We bond via storytelling. Cultures have done that since forever. I find it very odd that modern NT-centric culture does not.

odo2063,
@odo2063@chaos.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic It's called infodumping :autism:

Dr_Obvious,
@Dr_Obvious@chaos.social avatar

@odo2063 @actuallyautistic
I so far considdered info dumping to be about a certain topic.

Like if somebody accidentally mentions anything about antroposophy, I can talk for hours, why this is crazy dangereous esoteric shit, and everybody who know me goes, oh no they metioned it, hopefully he didn't notice.

But I am talking about just about anything possibly you can think off.

odo2063,
@odo2063@chaos.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic depends on how you define "certain topic", I guess.

Dr_Obvious,
@Dr_Obvious@chaos.social avatar

@odo2063 @actuallyautistic
Like special interests eg.

I thought of infodumping also more as a reactional thing.

Like somebody mentions the weather of the last months was wet, and I start explaining it's a misconception actually we have a drought, you can find maps about the ground humidity here.

But I am talking about an impuls.

Not saying you are wrong. I just had a different conception about infodumping, but I am still new to the topics.

odo2063,
@odo2063@chaos.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic As far as my understanding goes, it's dumping information regardless of if the listener is actually interested or not (anymore) or there is a listener at all or not (anymore). 🤷

Listening for us can be both a soothing stim and a way for us to connect to each other.

@Dr_Obvious Youngest son got dubbed Mr Encyclopedia at one workplace. We all share that absorbing of knowledge, in the family. @odo2063 @actuallyautistic

@Tooden @odo2063 @actuallyautistic
I got nicknamed professor at school.

Tooden,
@Tooden@aus.social avatar

@Dr_Obvious Yup.
It is spposedly a sign that autists are very comfortable with the people that they can do this oversharing/infodumping. @odo2063 @actuallyautistic

@Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic I dunno if it's common, but whenever I'm taking someone through an old neighbourhood I used to live in, I get delight in pointing out all the mundane things that I once knew. "There's the corner store where I got a 'Mr Slushy" every day after school, there's the culvert I sat on while eating lunch. Oh! And I've never been in that house, but I always liked the tree on their lawn."

oliphaunt,
@oliphaunt@mstdn.social avatar

@quietmarc @Dr_Obvious @actuallyautistic That's a delightfully evocative description that takes me right back to my own childhood neighbourhood, even though it shares none of the details with yours of course.
(I often visit it in memory but I don't have this information sharing urge that ia the actual current topic of discourse 🙃)
