twan,

Say you only took NT's into account without saying you only took NT's into account...

"Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have posited that these types of pre-performance rituals help to alleviate our stress in part by simply forcing us to focus on something else, giving us less time and space to spiral out of control."

What stands out to me GLARINGLY that the author is apparently oblivious to, is the very important distinction between internally and externally sourced ritual. I gain immeasurable benefit from autonomous ritual, and can be stopped in my tracks for NO GOOD REASON through being forced to participate in imposed ritual. Everyone genuinely comes with their own map, even NTs. Unless breaking souls is an important part of the workflow, let people calibrate themselves.

twan,

@anomalon @actuallyautistic Exactly. When I saw the title of the article, I at first completely misunderstood what they meant by 'rituals'. Then I read it and now I know they meant something that's horrific to me.

@anomalon @twan @actuallyautistic Not understanding this distinction is precisely why I abhorred the idea of ritual for decades and had to rediscover it the hard way.

The benefit of ritual, for me, is connecting with my known self, bringing familiarity into an unfamiliar situation, acquainting with my own sense of power...
Following herd instruction is the opposite of that in just about every way.
(Looking to bond a group through a shared public overcoming of discomfort has another name: hazing.)
I've shared rituals with other people, yea, but consent was 100%.

@twan @actuallyautistic "We start each meeting with a 90 second breathing exercise/an ice breaker/talking about a positive thing."

Eugh. Every meeting? Just get on with the meeting, for goodness sake.

I worked at Woolworth's in my late teens. Every morning they had a huddle where shop floor staff & management had to stand in a circle & chant. Fortunately cafe & warehouse staff were not forced to be involved. Probably because we were mostly goth/nerd/alt kids who wouldn't take it seriously.

@twan @actuallyautistic Those rituals were always THE reason for me to just go and grab a coffee.

twan,

@vger @actuallyautistic I recently was in what I thought was just a presentation (because it was advertised as such). As soon as they said "Right, let's all stand up first." — I was like "Nope, bye" and left.
