Covid Research: Common diabetes drug lowers SARS-CoV-2 levels, clinical trial finds

Looks like great news for those of us ineligible for paxlovid. Being able to reduce significantly the covid-19 viral load looks like a big win.

@pfred60 @auscovid19 If anything, these results are probably stronger than for Paxlovid. I'd really like to see a trial with both given together.

@pfred60 For people who can't avoid getting Covid? Or people who don't try to avoid getting infected? I think Diabetics should be covered, before their medication becomes scarce. 😷 @auscovid19

@Tooden @auscovid19 I am talking about for people who are trying to protect themselves and despite those best efforts still catch covid19. It's supposed to be readily available, cheap and the drug companies could up production. I'm not talking about taking it away from those who already need it.

@pfred60 And so many who 'need' antivirals just can't afford them, while those who can afford them, stupidly continue to get infected - thinking that antivirals are like Codral, or something.🙄 @auscovid19

@Tooden @auscovid19 in Australia access to Paxlovid is restricted to those over 65 or under with other conditions so if you don't qualify it is not available....

@Tooden@aus.social avatar

@pfred60 @auscovid19 I thought you could buy it for $100, or something like that.

@pfred60@aus.social avatar

@Tooden @auscovid19 Maybe you can get a script but it's over a $1000 a script. I tried to get a script at Christmas and was denied.

@pfred60 @Tooden @auscovid19 paxloid is available to under 65's who don't have 'conditions', just not subsidised by the PBS.

So with a private prescription from a doctor and ~$1000 you can get it.

@Marvin @Tooden @auscovid19 Unfortunately at Chritmas my GP was away and the dial a doc wouldn't do it - I did ask. Unfortunately at the time I wasn't in a position to be wandering around... but I had heard that..

Marvin,
@Marvin@aus.social avatar

@pfred60 @Tooden @auscovid19 not had to do it myself, but i've checked with 2 GP's i regularly see, both happy to provide a private script on a positive RAT/PCR
