Surely a Labor government should be embarrassed by delivering a surplus, when that money could've been spent on raising unemployment benefits or on building state housing.

@timrichards The excuse is inflation. But yeah, surplus during a cost of living crisis is pretty embarrassing. Surely when you have the country’s best economists in your contacts you can figure out how to support financially struggling people without pushing up inflation.
@evolvable I wonder if raising employment benefits would really fuel inflation. I mean, all that money would be spent, but I doubt it would be on anything that's in short supply.
Or redressing the basically criminal imbalance between public and private school funding. Or improving public health… Or basically behaving like anything other than a LNP government, proudly waving bags of taxpayer money as things fall apart…
@imalcolm I'm amazed that the whole surplus fetish is still happening. I thought we'd got past that. The state governments have shown that debt on public works can be good.
