Tonight we are going to one of our favorite holiday events: the HipHop Nutcracker at Strathmore Theater. It's a fun re-telling of the classic story and at the end Kurtis Blow comes out and does a break dance! And yes...he is quite old to still be doing that. Masks on of course. Xmas day will be quiet with a Zoom call to family who are far. Tree at my house and the Kwanzaa set at my daughter's so my grandson learns traditions
@BigAngBlack@blackmastodon@venitamathias UPDATE on HipHop Nutcracker: Kurtis opened the show and paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of HipHop. He took the audience on a retrospective of the hits from the first 15-20 years. The Theater was rocking! AT the end of that Kurtis said "Phew y'all, I am tired!" That was kind of a sign that he was not going to dance at the end. But we remained hopeful. Kurtis was born in 1959!!! Anyway the show was great. They added a sister who played violin. 1/2
@BigAngBlack@blackmastodon@venitamathias She started out with the classical nutcracker music and then she and the DJ broke into a hip hop version. Fantastic! At the end Kurtis comes out and introduces each dancer, they do a solo. At the end of that he usually dances. But this year, Kurtis bowed, as we all must eventually do, to the demands of age. He did not dance. Here's my question: did the white people in the audience understand what they were watching (vogue and break dance)? 2/2
@BigAngBlack@blackmastodon@venitamathias I hope you can enlarge this. Photos were prohibited but you know lawyers don't obey. This is the cast. The violinist is at center and Kurtis is to the left wearing the white cap and white sparkly pants. The show takes place in an urban area and photography was used to change scenes. Very well done.
@BigAngBlack For a few years. We alternate between that and Step Afrika"s Christmas show. COVID interrupted of course, but we try and make Black events part of my grandson's cultural development. He is a teen now and he picked Hip Hop Nutcracker this year. His girlfriend came with us! She's adorable and I am OLD. 😆We started out taking him to Step Afrika when he was about 5...
