This is an AMAZING introductory video on how the Porsche double-clutch (PDK) transmission works. It’s explained in very plain terms, with simple illustrations and a teardown of an actual transmission to show how they physically appear.
@trainman I’m not sure if the PDK is one of those causes. Germans overengineer and overthink a lot of things in cars, but transmissions don’t seem to be one of them. Even German engines tend to be quite bulletproof after you discover their one weakness and fix it 😄
@drahardja We test drove one of the first 2009 Boxsters with PDK and I was immediately sold. We got a second hand ‘09 a few years later and still have it. Over 90k miles and no gearbox problems.
@adrianco I totally understood why Porsche decided to kill the manual in the 991.1 GT3—the PDK is just superior in every way, both in performance and efficiency. But the manual gearbox is still a huge part of automotive culture and nostalgia; I bet the backlash from “purists” must have been quite surprising to their marketing department.
I admit I’m still a sucker for manuals, and all my cars currently have them. But I readily concede that I’m just being a sappy nostalgic fool and that it’s inferior in every way to PDKs (and ZF8s) except for the personal fun factor.
