Think I might convert my old Peugeot bike into a single-speed for commuting. It'll eliminate so many issues I end up with around gears, wheels, & general maintenance.

I was considering doing it anyway to sell, but my LBS has suggested it for me as a commuting option, which is tempting tbh

@lewis I always love the idea of a single speed but never know which gear ratio I'd want.

What about getting a Nexus 3 hub put into it?

@sarajw The nexus hubs are interesting, but to be honest my commute is so flat (~50m elevation over 17km) that as long as I don't pick an extreme gear I'll be absolutely fine

@lewis fair enough :)

My pootling bike that takes me to and from dropping off the kids or a 10 min ride to the metro station has been a winner with its 3 speed. I don't look after it very well 🤭

@sarajw Oh yeah they're absolutely bulletproof, I'm just trying to avoid spending anything extra beyond what I need on this one 😂 Cheap wheelset, crankset, and chain should be all I need for it

@lewis understood! It'll be kind of fun to ride too, I do like simplicity :)

Wouldn't go as far as a fixie though - I feel like I haven't heard anything from that community in years, wonder if many people still ride fixed gear bikes...

@sarajw They're definitely still a thing, I see a fair few around town. I would certainly try a fixie, although I wouldn't go as far as to remove the brakes like some people do, that terrifies me

@lewis lol yeah nah!

I used to live in Bristol and the idea of riding a fixie there was just beyond me. It'd be hard getting up the hills and terrifying going down them!

Here in Hamburg it's rather flatter so I could see it's more possible - but I live in suburbia so I mostly see Dutch style and cargo bikes.

@sarajw Manchester's pretty flat (at least within the city), so it's not too bad. Yeah, Bristol would be a nightmare, the hipsters there must have had thighs like He-Man.

I'd love a cargo bike, I did see you post about ordering one recently, I'd be interested to know how you find it once you've had it for a while

@lewis Oh I'll certainly post about it once it comes and I've had my first experiences.

Currently the person who would confirm the whole work bike scheme thing is off ill this week so I'm like nnnnggghh haha
