Tesla had overall scores in the middle of the pack (alongside brands like Chevrolet, Buick, Ram, Cadillac and Dodge). CR says the Elon Musk-led company’s EV powertrains tend to fare better than those from traditional automakers.
I imagine that a lot of this has more to do with the fact that these are all entirely new vehicles on entirely new technology and drivetrain platforms.
And that is almost always a recipe for unreliability when you’re manufacturing a complex thing. If you want a reliable version of something, don’t buy V1. Wait until it has been iterated on a bit.
