It's time...
Anyone else hunting for these?
Anyone else hunting for these?
johnnycashsguitar, Lucky…looks delicious.
Mister, How is the taste?
LibertyLizard, Delicious and fruity. Some say like banana crossed with mango but I think it’s unique. You’ll just have to try them for yourself.
FrankTheHealer, I have never heard of pawpaws before. They kinda look like figs. What are they like?
LibertyLizard, Hard to describe. If you are fluent in tropical fruits they are similar to cherimoya which is a relative. Otherwise… banana mango is something I’ve heard but isn’t quite accurate. They are their own thing! They are very soft and messy to eat and have large seeds though.
Vej, Got a hand full of small ones today along with an equal amount of spice bush.
WalrusByte, Are they hard to find? I heard they like to grow by creeks but that’s all I really know
LibertyLizard, Depends on the area. Yes look along creeks and rivers. The plant is not usually super rare but finding enough fruit sometimes can be. They like shade but only produce well if they get enough sun. Best areas I’ve seen are near bigger rivers where they get plenty of water and there is lots of sun coming from the river side.
janja, What are they?
LibertyLizard, (edited ) Pawpaws. Biggest native fruit in the US. It’s been a while since I had one so I’m excited. They smell good.
CM400, I put one in my backyard, in three years I shouldn’t have to forage!
WalrusByte, I won’t be hunting for them in the wild, but I will be going to the Ohio pawpaw fest next weekend!
LibertyLizard, Nice! Always wanted to go to something like that but I’ve never been close enough to one.
WalrusByte, Yeah, I got kinda lucky that it’s happening in Ohio the weekend after I move there. I’ve never tried a pawpaw before since they only grow in Appalachia and I’ve lived most of my life in the Intermountain West. I’ve really wanted to try them ever since I found out they exist!
LibertyLizard, They’re actually all over the eastern US except in the north. But for some reason those festivals seem to be primarily in Appalachia.
Enjoy! It’s unlike anything else you can grow in the US. Very tropical taste.
WalrusByte, Awesome! Excited to try them!
