Would it be more sensible to use 433mhz for the increased range, or 915 for the decreased interference from all the other devices using 433? ()

@jpm Really? but most garage door openers and things like that - e.g. my radio socket - use that range

@jpm Ah. looked into it more. It seems that it is allowed, but only for short bursts. Can only be transmitting for 1% the time

@jpm https://www.eevblog.com/forum/rf-microwave/433mhz-use-in-australia/

"We had a perfectly good band at 305MHz for car remotes & the like, but big business wanted to import EU style 433MHz units which, due to the existing large market were cheap.

Under pressure from various "interest groups", ACMA "rolled over & played dead" & so the so-called Low Interference Potential Device (LIPD) category was born."

@jpm regardless, 915 would be the way to go...?

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@mightyspaceman yep, 915 will still get you a few KM of range

@mightyspaceman it smells a lot like a Semtech SX1272 reference design

@mightyspaceman@aus.social avatar

@jpm but it'll work, right :)

@jpm I'll buy 3, 1 for a gateway and 2 for whatever I end up doing with them. Got a moderately long pole from an old trampole (about 2-3m) that I can stick a box holding the gateway on top of, then mount it somewhere high.

@jpm Bought

@mightyspaceman ok a single-channel gateway is fine for a handful of devices, but you’ll need to fix everything to using a single channel (preferably not one of the TTN channels) and data rate, and you won’t be able to use your gateway with TTN. Multi-channel gateways start from about the $100 mark, with a large chunk of that being the Semtech SX130x radio DSP
