I do not need a $40 MC68030 CPU and I absolutely do not need to design and build my own classic Mac around it

@timixretroplays I love* the pedants saying “mrr mrr you’re wrong it’s not a BGA it’s a PGA”

Oh no no no no no I WILL NOT make a ModernClassic 68k Mac that uses modern components

tell me again how toyota not going 100% into EVs is a mistake - they're selling more cars then ever! I love EVs, have been driving one for 5 years, but EVs are not the answer for a large portion of motorists yet and hybrid/ICE engines have a long life ahead of them (20+ years imho)

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@decryption that’s because so many people either hate driving, or their company fleet manager hates driving

I think I've just about got my credit card number memorized again.

Based on past history, of course, this means I'm probably going to have to replace it any day now... tugs on POS terminal to see if there's an obvious skimmer on it

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@azonenberg credit card number, expiry, AND security code all memorised. It’s so dangerous that I can buy stuff without having to grab my wallet…

Morning feed drama in the big tank!

The firemouth is real skittish, as expected, and the Jack Dempsey is just chilled as this morning. The firemouth snatched a food granule, went and hid below the wood structure, and started chewing, the JD just cruises over and starts chewing right in his face, staring him down.

She finishes the food, yawns, and he bolts toward the back of the tank 😆

At least I got to assess his damage: scratched face, half his tail missing, and a chunk of dorsal fin gone

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@sortius … I read the first 2 sentences as containing “Fedi drama” and “Jack Dorsey”

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@sortius another double coming right up

@dlharmon You've done bare metal Zynq-7 stuff right?

Do you have any kind of blog or resources to talk about how to set up an extreme minimalist no-OS bare metal Zynq firmware?

Ideally I'd like just a single source file (not generated by vivado, something I can actually write from scratch) that I can just build with arm-none-eabi-g++, put on a SD card (zynq doesn't allow you to jtag binaries to the PS right?), and then boot up and give me some sign of life by poking a GPIO SFR or something.

Ultimately my goal is to experiment with some truly cursed things that are likely incompatible with all of the generated wrappers, petalinux, etc.

Things like having PL be a CoreSight APB bus master that can poke debug registers on the A9s.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@azonenberg @poleguy @dlharmon that’s utterly deranged. Magnificent!

I’ve got a Zynq dev board on my desk, don’t tempt me.

Back to pulling out my hair tonight and I think of checking to see there isn’t a short between power rails… and there was. I’m used to overcurrent protection on the power supply or magic smoke letting me know I’ve made this mistake, but no this time the switching regulator was just protecting itself. I’d say I need a good collection of bodges to make this board work but the @jpm has me beat there this week

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@vk3xe dead shorts are the first thing I look for before applying power at all, quick and easy to do with multimeter in continuity mode. If you find one, that’s when it gets tricky…

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@vk3xe hint: they’re usually hiding underneath a QFN touching the thermal pad…

I don’t want to ‘sign’ a PDF file Acrobat. I want to put a signature.png image file on the line where it says ‘signature’. There’s a difference

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@liamvhogan because you need to give Adobe money

jpm,

@ThermiteBeGiants @liamvhogan what, give Adobe either money or spicy autocarrot training data? Probably

The things that happen in Fitzroy.

Was I fucking drunk when I designed this board? I completely missed 2 GPIOs to control a LED and a switch on the schematic, and I used the wrong SERCOM for the I2C lines which means I now need to swap SCL and SDA.

This thing is a fucking mess.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Unixbigot JANK LIFE!

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

I am now suspicious of the MCP7940 RTC. Seems to be spewing garbage at me, and occasionally locking up the entire I2C bus after writes.

Either that or my bodge didn’t work.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

Nope, vendor-code issue. Who would have thought that zero of three i2c devices I’m using like having a re-start issued in the middle of their write sequence?

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@JustJimWillDo most devices need it when reading starting from a specified register, so providing a matching write sequence kinda-sorta makes sense?

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@JustJimWillDo exactly
