@gemelliz@garossino Megacorps are going to fight tooth and nail against doing the right thing. It's like the scorpion and the frog; it's just what they are.
If we want responsible social media, we have to create it ourselves. Mastodon is good; I also think Canada would be wise to have a government-run social media platform that could, amongst other things, prioritize important news like the wildfire situation.
@gemelliz I have no qualms with the govt/regulators taking them to task for all the damage they've done. But by requiring them to pay because they allow links to be posted on their website? That's a bad precedent. Let the govt/regulators go after the real problems instead of hiding behind this just because Australia did something similar.
C-18 should be rescinded AND fb/google should have their feet held to the flames for the massive amounts of harm they've both facilitated and directly caused.
My *expectation, however, is that doing so would also open the door to expectations of similar treatment towards all manner of bad corporate actors, many of whom are big donors. Can't have that 🤪
