An update to Google's privacy policy suggests that the entire public internet is fair game for it's AI projects. If Google can read your words, assume they belong to the company now, and expect that they’re nesting somewhere in the bowels of a chatbot.
On Wednesday, OpenAI and Microsoft were sued in a class action lawsuit seeking $3 billion in damages for allegedly stealing “vast amounts of private information” from internet users without consent in order to train ChatGPT.
This lawsuit, which was filed on June 28 in federal court in San Francisco, CA, and includes sixteen anonymous plaintiffs, claimed that OpenAI secretly “scraped 300 billion words from the internet” without registering as a data broker or obtaining consent. Microsoft is OpenAI's main customer and corporate partner, licensing AI technology from the company for billions of dollars.
Some effort in sorting through noise now would probably make it easier in the future. Enough noise becomes another pattern to recognise. Up to a point.
Nothing especially new. I'm surprised it has taken this long to decide to use it for AI. At the same time, I hope they have a team ready to deal with all the copyright claims. If youtube was a minefield, AI will be. They're stealing IP directly and recycling it. If Google becomes AI, then Google will make itself obsolete. We use Google to search for answers by others, not to be force-fed a single answer.
