How has your JRPG 2024 been?

After a fast and furious few months to start the year, the release schedule is starting to slow down a bit before it picks up again later in the year. We also have the expanded Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance and Trails through Daybreak on the horizon.

So, how’s your 2024 been? Here are some of the bigger releases that have come out this year:

  • Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth
  • Granblue Fantasy Relink
  • Persona 3 Reload
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • Unicorn Overlord
  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
  • Sand Land
  • SaGa Emerald Beyond

I played or still playing Persona 3 Reload, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Unicorn Overlord and all of those game are very good, so i would say the new releases aber very good this year. I would even say, it’s already a better year than 2023. Some of the game above i still want to try out, but a bit later.

Ashtear,

2023 was a bit slow for me in the genre, which is wild considering I think it might have been the best year in video games since 1998.

My favorites last year were the Trails releases, which both ended up being replays for me because I’d played the fan TLs. 🤷‍♀️

De_Narm,

I usually don’t play stuff at release, but I did with Infinite Wealth and sunk well above a 100h into it. Finished all Side Stories and did both major mini games. My only criticism is the weaker story compared to 7 alongside the focus on Kiryu.

The only other JRPG I played this year so far was Star Ocean: The Divine Force. It is obviously flawed, but still a lot of fun. Combat feels good and the movement is fun. The biggest problem is probably that I’m almost done and the story just started to get more interesting, but it was fine before.

If you want to count them, I also played Nioh and Monster Hunter Rise. Rise being one of my favorite games on the switch and Nioh a competent soulslike, although on the easier side.

There’s still a lot of stuff releasing this year I want to play eventually. Unicorn Overlord, Eiyuden Chronicles, Suikoden Remakes, SMT V Vegance and Metaphor ReFantazio. And, if you want to count it, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

It’s once again a really good year for JRPGs.

Ashtear, (edited )

Yeah, I’m for sure interested in Metaphor, SMTV, Elden Ring DLC, and Suikoden remasters. Eiyuden is scratching the Suiko itch so it can wait, but Metaphor is likely day one for me. I’ve just loved what Hashino’s put out.
