Okay, let's say I want to use for hosting a campaign setting.

Who has experiences with this, and what recommendations can you give me?

For reference: I’m a Dokuwiki (at work) and MediaWiki (internet) admin and user.

If it has to be a wiki, use MediaWiki. No sane person (read: not working in IT) will want to learn a wiki-syntax. So MediaWikis Wysiwig editor is the way to go.

Most people are used to collaborative document editing the google or office 365 way now. So if a shared document or two is enough: Use those.

Personally, I’d try to get them to use https://cryptpad.fr/. It is the best,

@SaltyMonk

I regularly create documents. Wiki syntax holds no terror for me. 😉

But I am curious: What do you think are the advantages of MediaWiki over DokuWiki?

@juergen_hubert
The Wysiwig editor and the data driven features of https://www.semantic-mediawiki.org/. The inclusion of CirrusSearch. DokuWiki feels quite dated for me today.

What is TexLaTex? I still use XeLaTeX, But tend to write MarkDown only and get it converted afterwards.

@SaltyMonk It's apparently proper etiquette around here to use as the hashtag for Tex.

@juergen_hubert if you're the only one using the wiki and you're comfortable with the interface, that's one barrier removed. But what is the intent of the wiki? Notes, sharing with others, player engagement? Each is a bit of a different answer; the last will be less about platform and more about how willing your players are to read it.

@diotima Primarily I intend it to be a world encyclopedia.

@juergen_hubert MediaWiki is good for large-scale projects, but I would recommend DokuWiki instead if you plan to have less than 10k pages or so. It's much easier to use, administer and maintain.

@juergen_hubert @Whidou Chiming in with the DokuWiki recommendation--it doesn't use a database, just text files, so it's easy to back up and access your info with no worries of DB corruption. There are also plugins to write your pages in Markdown if that's your pace.

@ljwrites @Whidou

How well does it do categories?

@Whidou How does it do with, say, clickable maps?

Teyrnon,
@Teyrnon@dice.camp avatar

@juergen_hubert I used MediaWiki for about ten years as a repository of setting information. Categories are invaluable for keeping things organized.

@Teyrnon Is your wiki public? If so, could you give me the link?
