Howdy y’all! I am diving extremely deep into mycology and am on a quest to catch up on all modern research on the subject. I recently discovered 21st Century Guidebook to Fungi (Free from the authors!! …org.uk/21st_century_guidebook_to_fungi_platinum/) but I need MORE! I’ll list out some conditions and wants to see if that...
I absolutely love all things mushrooms, particularly exploring all the edible varieties I can find and trying them! Thing is, I live in the city and am the only one in my house who eats mushrooms (no one else likes having them in the house, let alone on a plate!) so I was wondering if anyone had any advice for 1) where to find a...
Which of them were/are consumed the most, which of them are dangerous and why. Where in the world do the most “magic mushrooms” grow and which ones are usually used for consumption?
Please add your favourite shops for gourmet and medicinal spawn, spores, liquid cultures, supplies … especially interested in finding Cordyceps and heat-resistant strains.
Seen many puffballs in this area, but never like this. Today they were everywhere. https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/418b22fb-24f0-4a7f-9f9b-1432ce55ca9f.jpeg
There is a ton of anecdotal evidence on the interwebs about the photosensitivity of fungi, ie, it governs the direction of pin growth, fruit colors, etc. suggesting a circadian rhythm of sorts....
https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/7fa9ca08-3cac-49a7-ace0-81ec6dc825b8.jpegPassed this on a backpacking trip in the Berkshires, northeast US. Very new to mushroom ID, but iNaturalist said it was Chicken of the Woods! Didn’t try to eat it, but it was cool to find something potentially edible! I later spotted a ton more on fallen...
This is my first time growing King Oyster mushrooms. They’ve been in the mostly damp cellar for about 2 weeks now, it’s the best I can offer in terms of temperature/moisture/air quality. I gave them water every 3-4 days but I’m not sure if it’s enough and I’ve just cut open the bag to give them more breathing space....
First pics of my first pins. I cut slits in the bag on Sunday and saw the first pins appear yesterday morning, now they’re growing fast. This clump is already a full inch (25mm) tall, and I have four openings in the bag that are all pinning. I’ve been misting them a couple times a day but now I’ll be working from home...
My first oyster pins appeared today and I’ve been thinking about humidity control. I have this big tub I made my still air box from and I’ve been wondering about using it to hold the two fruiting bags I have. I was concerned that maybe the X slices wouldn’t get enough fresh air if I covered them, but then I’ve been...
So my two bags of pink oysters, which haven’t appeared to be doing much on anything, have suddenly pinned right behind the air vent on both bags. The first picture is a bunch of little guys like I expected it to start out as, but the second bag is one massive stem as wide as the cap! For reference, the air vent patch black...
I have some pink spawn which was being expanded out in jars of rye berries and popcorn kernels. There’s been good growth and since a couple weeks ago the jar appeared to be completely colonized (at which time I left one jar sitting and moved another jar to a couple fruiting bags). It’s been sitting on the basement floor...
At the suggestion of another member I tried expanding my spawn on popcorn kernels. This involved boiling for about 20 minutes, drying, then pressure-canning for 90 minutes at 15psi. After cooling my spawn was divided between the jars, which were allowed to grow for a little over two weeks. On Monday I transferred the contents of...
I’ve lost track now of how long since I started on this, but I think it’s been 2-3 weeks since I transferred my original spawn to grain jars? All of the jars have been fully colonized except for one jar of pink oysters, which fought against some kind of contamination but seems to have gotten going again. It had some good...
It is so dry in my part Germany right now, the only mushrooms that grow in significant numbers are summer oysters. And then they are often too dry aswell. This is the only good patch I found during my last hunt....
I thought some folks might want to see an update on what I've been growing. For reference, I tried to grown button mushroom spawn on boiled cardboard, only to learn a few days later that this shouldn't be possible. Imagine my surprise when the mycelium started growing anyway!...
Hi everyone! In an effort to help grow the community, and as someone new to mycology, I would like to gather recommendations for reference materials. My goal in this project is to develop this into a list for the community to share these resources. Books, websites, apps, anything is fair game for this list....
