Daylight Saving starts in New Zealand on Sunday 24 September. There is a bit of discontent every year. So what do you think?

Please boost for wide coverage.

@bananabob - This is the issue that could swing the election, how do the major parties stand on this?

@Bavman 😁 Guess it might amongst some NZ First voters and alike.

@bananabob I am actually fine with either doing away with daylight saving time or keeping it all year. I would just like to not have to deal with the time change twice a year!

@bananabob I am one of those weirdos who the time change really works for but I appreciate most people hate it.

rwmtinkywinky,

@bananabob for systems it should be a non issue, run and store exclusively UTC and only convert on display. Different for people's body clocks, but there is no good tech reason to care.

@bananabob 12:00 at solar noon every day ;)

@bananabob is "do away with time measurement altogether" an option?

adminkirsty,

@bananabob
This could become a more nuanced discussion, with impacts of climate change affecting working temperatures. I can guess we will soon be having this come up on the agenda.

@bananabob The issue is more than little discontent, disconnect even. It is shown, over the population, to kill.

Using total mortality as a negative indicator for the impact on public health, we demonstrate that transition periods in daylight saving time regulations are linked to a rise in total mortality and should be avoided in the interest of general well-being.

@abartlet Then all international flights are dangerous for the same reason, especially for the crews.

@bananabob The hazards of shift work are well documented. It should be voluntary to the rest of society however.

@bananabob I'm on team Split the Difference.

I actually wrote a blog post about it:

@bananabob UTC+13 breaks things and I hate all the international meetings needing to be rescheduled.

aligorith,
@aligorith@mastodon.nz avatar

@abartlet @bananabob
Indeed. Keeping us on UTC+12 means that anyone who needs to work with UTC timestamps (e.g. me, for work these days) have an easier life 😜

bananabob,
@bananabob@mastodon.nz avatar

@aligorith @abartlet Do you still need to shut down the system for an hour when the clock goes back? We needed to do that back in the day for DB2 timestamps.

aligorith,
@aligorith@mastodon.nz avatar

@bananabob @abartlet
The system in question just runs in UTC all year round 😂

@bananabob I don't care if it's do away with DST or keep it all year. Or split the difference and move time 1/2 hour forward all year. Whatever. JUST STOP SWITCHING AROUND!
