@tk Also a thing you can do on trains here is take your bicycle with you (with hour limits for regional trains that's pretty much non-peak hours and reservation required in summer).
Sorry but you're living in Europe and don't have long distance trains. Try like Moscow <-> Qaraghandy train. It's almost two and a half days trip. Five days total of my vacation is GONE. Compared of two hour-ish trip to the airport and three hours of suffering on airplane, I would pick the latter.
@a1ba@tk Yeah for really long distances or where the train lines sucks a plane makes more sense (although when the train lines suck the airplane lines are rarely better).
Or you make it a sort of road trip like americans so often do.
Also how the fuck does it takes you two hours to get to the airport?
@a1ba@tk btw the reason I'm making the case for trains is how absurdly often people take the plane on a regular basis for inner-country trips, not vacation stuff.
@drq@a1ba@tk@lanodan
to drive point home:
It takes for me at least 8 hours on a plane to get from the place where I live, to the place where I was born.
On a train it takes whole week! People are writing books and shooting documentaries about this particular train trip!
But, yeah, if you're choosing between 1.5 hours on a plane and 5 hours on a train, there almost no reason to take plane since there are all this stupid security rituals and airports usually located outside of the city, while train stations are inside. Your "1.5 hour trip" in reality will take at least 3 hours of your life.
@dotterian@drq@a1ba@tk Yeah, people got to count the entire time passed from their origin (home) to their destination, and with airplanes it makes such a huge difference as it's at least outside the city or in another one entirely (specially International™ ones where it's about one per country).
@ChristopherBRobin@tk@drq@lanodan@a1ba likely depends on the locale. But airports don’t care because you’re not gonna be there forever, so it’s harder to trace they sold it to you versus a local liquor store.
I noticed it first when I was in Dallas Fort Worth International and also when I was down in El Salvador. Both places just had this giant display bottle in the front and a few more bottles in the back it looked like they'd be willing to sell.
@ChristopherBRobin@tk@drq@lanodan I once boarded a plane so fucking drunk, they looked at me hoping I wouldn't cause them problems yet still allowed me to board.
And this was the best flight because I asleep the second the plane took off and awaken when everybody already left the plane.
@a1ba Moscow fucking sucks. Its transit infrastructure fucking sucks, despite all the effort. Roads suck due to lack of effort. Countryside sucks as well, because there's nothing there.
@drq@tk@a1ba Yeah, I'm not saying it's not hard.
But there's a lot of fucked up cases, specially when you account for the worst ones (like when a line is closed for the season and makes a trip go from 6h to 12h).
