@tk Everything about airlines and planes just sucks.
Inefficient, expensive, security theater, airports are meh at best, least amount of space.

Meanwhile trains are quite like trams but comfier and with enough space to use a laptop and/or eat.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@tk Also a thing you can do on trains here is take your bicycle with you (with hour limits for regional trains that's pretty much non-peak hours and reservation required in summer).

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@lanodan @tk
>trains ... comfier

Sorry but you're living in Europe and don't have long distance trains. Try like Moscow <-> Qaraghandy train. It's almost two and a half days trip. Five days total of my vacation is GONE. Compared of two hour-ish trip to the airport and three hours of suffering on airplane, I would pick the latter.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba @tk Yeah for really long distances or where the train lines sucks a plane makes more sense (although when the train lines suck the airplane lines are rarely better).
Or you make it a sort of road trip like americans so often do.

Also how the fuck does it takes you two hours to get to the airport?

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba @tk btw the reason I'm making the case for trains is how absurdly often people take the plane on a regular basis for inner-country trips, not vacation stuff.

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@lanodan @tk yeah, can agree.

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar

@a1ba @tk Still, depends on how big your country is. Ours is 1/-fucking-6 of the whole dry land.

@lanodan

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@drq @tk @lanodan yeah, there are two countries like that. Russia and USA. The difference is that Russia at least have SOME railway system.

dotterian,

@drq @a1ba @tk @lanodan
to drive point home:
It takes for me at least 8 hours on a plane to get from the place where I live, to the place where I was born.
On a train it takes whole week! People are writing books and shooting documentaries about this particular train trip!

But, yeah, if you're choosing between 1.5 hours on a plane and 5 hours on a train, there almost no reason to take plane since there are all this stupid security rituals and airports usually located outside of the city, while train stations are inside. Your "1.5 hour trip" in reality will take at least 3 hours of your life.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@dotterian @drq @a1ba @tk Yeah, people got to count the entire time passed from their origin (home) to their destination, and with airplanes it makes such a huge difference as it's at least outside the city or in another one entirely (specially International™ ones where it's about one per country).

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@lanodan @tk

>Also how the fuck does it takes you two hours to get to the airport?

It's just Moscow being the hostile to the idea of navigating in it and Sheremetevo being the worst airport ever.

It takes an hour from my place to the train station that goes to the airport, and an hour on the train.

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba @tk An hour by train, damn, even for one that stops at a bunch of stations this would be really slow.

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar

@lanodan Transportation is hard. Like energy, it's never as clear-cut, as some would like you to believe. Nothing is black and white, context matters.

@tk @a1ba

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@drq @lanodan @tk in this case it's Sheremetevo just fucking sucks.

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@drq @lanodan @tk (I hate airports)

tk,
@tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com avatar

@a1ba @drq @lanodan Airports are just overpriced malls that planes happen to stop at. :blobfoxdisgust:

I've never seen a single liquor store that will sell you a 10 gallon bottle of liquor like it's nothing. They'll do it there though.

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar

@ChristopherBRobin Clearly your standard of "nothing" is a generous one.

@tk @lanodan @a1ba

marine,
@marine@breastmilk.club avatar

@ChristopherBRobin @tk @drq @lanodan @a1ba because airports won’t lose their liquor license.

ChristopherBRobin,
@ChristopherBRobin@iddqd.social avatar

Is there a limit on how much liquor you can sell in a container or something?

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar
lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@drq @ChristopherBRobin @tk @marine @a1ba Pretty sure you can buy that kind of amount in France without question, will just be expensive.

Weird as fuck to have that in airports though given that there's no way you're taking 10 gallons of whatever on a plane.

marine,
@marine@breastmilk.club avatar

@ChristopherBRobin @tk @drq @lanodan @a1ba likely depends on the locale. But airports don’t care because you’re not gonna be there forever, so it’s harder to trace they sold it to you versus a local liquor store.

ChristopherBRobin,
@ChristopherBRobin@iddqd.social avatar

I noticed it first when I was in Dallas Fort Worth International and also when I was down in El Salvador. Both places just had this giant display bottle in the front and a few more bottles in the back it looked like they'd be willing to sell.

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar

@ChristopherBRobin Come to Russia. Large liquor bottles galore.

Good ones are not cheap, still cheaper than airport stuff though.

@tk @marine @lanodan @a1ba

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@ChristopherBRobin @tk @drq @lanodan I once boarded a plane so fucking drunk, they looked at me hoping I wouldn't cause them problems yet still allowed me to board.

And this was the best flight because I asleep the second the plane took off and awaken when everybody already left the plane.

ChristopherBRobin,
@ChristopherBRobin@iddqd.social avatar

Very nice, skipped all the boring parts

a1ba,
@a1ba@suya.place avatar

@ChristopherBRobin @tk @drq @lanodan yeah.

Basically a teleport

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@a1ba @tk @ChristopherBRobin @drq Reminds me of one of my Dad's colleague purposefully getting drunk in SF-Paris airplanes to doze of.

drq,
@drq@mastodon.ml avatar

@a1ba Moscow fucking sucks. Its transit infrastructure fucking sucks, despite all the effort. Roads suck due to lack of effort. Countryside sucks as well, because there's nothing there.

@tk @lanodan

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

@drq @tk @a1ba Yeah, I'm not saying it's not hard.
But there's a lot of fucked up cases, specially when you account for the worst ones (like when a line is closed for the season and makes a trip go from 6h to 12h).
