not going to post in the glass thread but just my two cents: competition and enshittification can go hand in hand

pyrex for instance was once famous for making thermal resistant shatter resistant borosilicate glass cookware, however as time went on they switched to more fragile tempered glass

however it is very easy to buy no brand store brand borosilicate glass cookware nowadays which is just as good and affordable as well; it’s just people who still buy pyrex who get shafted cause they expect the quality of old but are actually getting an inferior product to your generic store brand

@cell I think about the process of things getting worse to reach a wider market a lot. Friends used to really like Spotify because it gave great recommendations, apparently it does not anymore. Netflix website used to be really good, now it's just a curated list.

@sun strangely enough the foss world just evolved as if nothing happened and is better for it, something like https://beets.io/ didn’t exist when i was first building my music collection but its now so easy and practical to do so :blobcatheadphones:

@cell oh, beets is interesting, thank you

@cell it is possible that the problems with AI and with cheap clones of products may get bad enough that competitors that rely on (good) human curation may have a resurgence. There is a silver lining to the nightmare future.

@sun @cell this will absolutely happen. there's a big hole in the market for 'amazon but everything costs twice as much but doesn't suck'

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@lain @cell I think critics are often bothered that the "best" thing isn't the most popular but as long as you can get get it and it's not a pure luxury good only for the wealthy I think the market hasn't "failed"

lain,
@lain@lain.com avatar

@sun @cell a lot of it is the 'nirvana fallacy': wouldn't it be nicer if we just had the same things we have now, just better and cheaper?

sun,
@sun@shitposter.world avatar

@lain @cell you know what's funny though I didn't notice too much that Amazon turned into a cheap chinese crap seller because the cheap chinese crap works pretty good these days. aliexpress might be cheaper but Amazon has same-day delivery of cheap chinese crap.

lain,
@lain@lain.com avatar

@sun @cell yeah the complaints are too much, and it also really depends on the actual customers. For example, if you look for cat furniture or any kind of household items on amazon jp, they usually look elegant and cost quite a bit more than their US or EU variants, but those are ugly and plasticky. I doubt this is because sellers on amazon jp are pure souls who understand the value of craftsmanship and would never sell china clone products. I think it's because the japanese are less tolerant of filling their homes with ugly crap.

@lain @cell Americans will consistently buy the cheapest thing then complain about it but keep buying the cheapest thing.

@cell @sun not sure if I trust that for my obscure anime music

cell,
@cell@pl.ebin.zone avatar

@coolboymew @sun it works well for obscure non-anime jp music, it pulls from the musicbrainz database and saved alot of hassle in tagging and helped make it consistent too :heheLain:

@cell @coolboymew @sun musicbrainz db remains speechless for the music in my collection :hehecat:

@twinspin6 @coolboymew @sun that’s why you add contribute to the db :heheLain:

@cell @coolboymew @sun once i start, there's no holding me back
once i manually added metadata for a bands entire discography because once you start doing it, you have to pull through

@cell @sun without forgetting my vast indie vaporwave and futurefunk collection

@coolboymew @cell players need plugins that make it easier to crowdsource categorization or something. this is the future we should have had.
