The Art Newspaper leads off with a deep dive into the vibrancy of the Palestinian art scene in Gaza - “people in the community really responded to what these artists were doing in places like Shababeek & Eltiqa, which unfortunately have now been destroyed.”

@alkeddie unreal. Save for one or two mild statements, an uninformed reader would hardly guess WHY these folks' lives have been turned into nightmares. For numbers we're reminded early that Hamas killed 1200 & kidnapped 250, but NOTHING about Israel killing 40,000. Everything in passive voice, buildings "were destroyed," & we hear of Israel "withdrawing" from Al-Shifa but not what happened there (or that they leveled it). Honestly irresponsible.

The article is attached as an addendum to the link to the podcast where the actual destruction is spoken about in detail and serves more as an introduction to the Palestinian artists. I recommend listening toto and sharing the podcast.

@alkeddie i appreciate the spotlight on the artists, it just seems weird which features of the war they felt deserved details & which they didn't. 🤷

@alkeddie & ig the podcast is cool & all but it's not my medium, I read stuff. I didn't even see the podcast link. I'm not looking for war porn, I already know what's going on, so the fact that its offered somewhere else is good i guess but easy to ignore. Lots of people in the art world want art to be apolitical at all times. So... it'll be easy for some to tune out, especially for the non-podcast-inclined like myself.

@alkeddie again I'm not saying the needed bloody photos or gory details, but really, we even were told about a few members of one art show who were apparently part of an antisemitic demonstration. That needed to be there, the numbers from October 7 needed to be there, but not that it was Israel who destroyed Al-Shifa (despite no credible indication of it being a Hamas operation base) & left 3 mass graves there? Odd choices is my only point.

@itsmeholland

Tbh was surprised to see the podcast even cover the topic at all given that apolitical art world and hadn’t paid too much attention to the detail of the article having listened in work. But agree on your assessment regards what an uninformed reader may take from it regarding circumstances of the genocide. As I said, my main focus being on the artists stories being shared and hopefully discovering more of their art 🙏
