🆕 blog! “One MegaWattHour of Battery Power!”

Less than a year ago, in August 2023, we installed a 4.8kWh Solar Battery at a cost of £2,900. Whenever I talk about the upfront capital costs of solar power, people rightly want to know what the payback period is. Well, after less than 10 months, the battery has given us 1MWh. To put that […]

@Edent
ok, so the gist is: payback time for the batteries: about 8 years. payback time for the solar panels: again, if I look through your blog, about 7/8 years (higher cost but higher "return" the reduction being 360 instead of 300) (I hope it was for the same installation 😁)
So it needs to stay up and running for 15 years.

Basically, that means: hope the battery doesn't wear out in less than 15 years, and staying with the same electrical and same house for 15 years. Do I get it right?

@ZeugmaFr No. You are wrong. The payback time isn't consecutive - it is concurrent.

You can see a photo of the installed battery at https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2023/08/review-moixa-4-8kwh-solar-battery/

Some batteries are weatherproof and can be fitted outside.

@Edent RE the battery blog, might be friendly to mention to people that your octopus link is a referral link ;)

Good write up tho, I wrote about things you can dump excess energy into when the prices are low and you have an excess..

Isn't this obvious enough?

@Edent I'm blind, where is that?! :D

I'll send a capture of what I see..

@johnmclear
Oh! That post.
Is this not enough? Or do you mean a different link?

johnmclear,

@Edent Hah I think my brain skipped the bits in () :P

I'd say it's clear enough tbh.

I was wondering if there is a HTML attribute for referrals (Where the author is compensated by the visitor clicking the link) and haven't found anything which is kinda interesting.

It'd be nice for the person clicking a link to know if their a financial motivation in the author sharing that link with them, y'know?

@johnmclear there was a proposal for Unicode to have an "External Link" character. But I don't think that went anywhere.
I'm not aware of anything for "Affiliate link" other than an ad blocker.

@Edent
so to get my head right: payback time is about 8 years? battery+solar panel cost included?

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@ZeugmaFr Yes.

@Edent don't care. talk to me when you have reached one point twenty one.

@Edent I am considering doing it when we redo our roof (don’t want to install anything on an old roof) but my main problem isn’t the tech or even install cost, it’s how scammy the whole commercial aspect around it is (at least where I am). All I see is over inflated claims, financing offers, etc, when all I want is a quality setup with reliable support if needed…

Edent,
@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

@g I don't know where in the world you are. I'd recommend speaking to neighbours with panels and and seeing who they do / don't recommend.
Avoid financing if you can. Or take out your own private loan.
