🆕 blog! “One MegaWattHour of Battery Power!”

Less than a year ago, in August 2023, we installed a 4.8kWh Solar Battery at a cost of £2,900. Whenever I talk about the upfront capital costs of solar power, people rightly want to know what the payback period is. Well, after less than 10 months, the battery has given us 1MWh. To put that […]

@Edent
ok, so the gist is: payback time for the batteries: about 8 years. payback time for the solar panels: again, if I look through your blog, about 7/8 years (higher cost but higher "return" the reduction being 360 instead of 300) (I hope it was for the same installation 😁)
So it needs to stay up and running for 15 years.

Basically, that means: hope the battery doesn't wear out in less than 15 years, and staying with the same electrical and same house for 15 years. Do I get it right?

@Edent
so to get my head right: payback time is about 8 years? battery+solar panel cost included?

This access cover in Kelvingrove Park has long been a bit of a puzzle for me. Situated near the Park Drive entrance, you can just make out that it's a Fire Point (FP) cover made by Thomas Leadbetter and Co. Based on Gordon Street, with a works on Garnkirk Street, this Glasgow company was a plumbers, lead merchant and brass foundry, which, amongst other things made brass values for fire points (what we'd now call a fire hydrant) in the 1860s.

Any regulatory requirement? like "There's a pipe going through the public/accessible space there, so there should be an hydrant"?

    I'm looking for an #NFC reader to connect to my #Linux laptop which can be used with #WebAuthn / #PassKeys.

    Anyone have a personal recommendation?

    Boosts appreciated 😀

    @Edent you need something that works with pcsclite. These things use a chipset made by NXP, and usually the internal are designed by 2 companies: HiD or ACS.

    The ACS ACR122u has been the staple for the last 10+ years.

    For HiD, look at the 'omnikey' line (I don't know what their latest thing is).

    Both are available through the usual robbers (the one is 'zon, digi-key, RS)

    ZeugmaFr,
    @ZeugmaFr@hostux.social avatar

    @Edent ACR122u mainly. The omnikey is cumbersome (it takes a lot of space due to its design).

    If you want the 'ultimate' card reader, have a look at their offering with 'dual interface' - you will get NFC and chip interfaces.

    This seems a good candidate for a map warping on a modern GIS... did you try it? (or do you know if someone did it?)

    Travel experts of Mastodon, I need advice. I'll be traveling without checked luggage, but I may bring back liquids that cannot be carried in cabin luggage. What is the easiest and/or cheapest small piece of luggage that I can check in when I didn't bring checked-in luggage when flying out?

    @simonbs @icanzilb
    Some companies tried something like that a few (20!) years ago.
    TL;DR: the rental was more expensive than buying a cheap chinese one use luggage or sending a parcel via post or delivery service.

    Could you please help me find some folklore?

    The Brothers Grimm recorded the story "Der süße Brei" about a magic porridge pot.
    When instructed, it produces food until told to stop. One day, the owner forgets the magic word and the village is engulfed in porridge.

    If you are NOT German or English-speaking, does your culture have a similar cautionary tale?
    If so, what foodstuff is it about?

    Thanks gang, boosts appreciated.

    For sure, he losts the .
    But this rings a bell about the story of a windmill that can't be stopped.
    And now I'm wondering if "Meunier, tu dors", a nursery rhyme, is linked to this trope.
    And wikipedia won't help there...
