When you write longhand, you write slower than typing. Because it takes longer, you spend more time with what you’re writing. When you spend more time with what you’re writing, you remember and learn more. Typing shortcuts memory by shortcutting time.

@SergKoren I'm left handed. When I write longhand, I spend more time noticing how annoying and uncomfortable and messy it is than I do noticing details about whatever I am writing down.
I might make a good druid (who famously disdained writing things down): I got through a BA and two Masters degrees with a minimum of actual note-taking.

@elysegrasso Sounds like a personal problem, not a writing problem ;) Your handwriting couldn’t be as bad as mine until I started writing longhand full-time.

@drunkenmadman I get it ;) Most people confuse writing with editing. You write long then edit short.

@SergKoren I wholeheartedly agree and point that out in the "Where's the Evidence?" https://mgblog.org/2024/03/07/learning-something-anew.html I am now taking notes by hand and I find myself remembering more stuff from what I take notes on, and being able to apply it and recall it in conversation. That's a BIG benefit for me. It's also kinda ironic given my role as an edtech advocate who switched from writing cursive to typing early on in life, only to return after 30 years. 🙂
