I was thinking about shopping for a nice watch and remembered I had my grandfather's old Seiko automatic sitting in a drawer. Pulled it out and it was in really bad shape. Cracked crystal, very grimy, and although it did run, there was not much of a reserve. It's not a valuable watch at all, but it does have a lot of sentimental value for me.

Well, I sent it in for a complete overhaul, and couldn't be happier with the result.

The same watch after repair and cleaning. Beautiful, and working perfectly.

@Erich my parents gave me a nice seiko watch like this in the 70s, back when it was believed that I could be trusted with objects of value. I sure did like it, but not for long

Who else learned how to drive like this? Just reacting to a projector playing a video of someone else driving. I believe it was generously called a "simulator"

peterhoneyman,
@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

@dan @ricci @kstatz12 @cross i was one! but Lynn didn’t see the value in it, so that was that. (Same with my awesome collection of boxes that Apple products came in — I had so many, I was able to build a little fort out of them! they had to go, too )

leaving utrecht by car — 45 kg of luggage is too much for a couple of olds to haul to the tram stop and then on and off the tram and then to the platform at utrecht centraal and then on and off the train to amsterdam centraal. (we vowed to travel light on this trip lol.)

we should have booked the eurostar to lille a long time ago – of course it’s sold out, so we’ll be on the local

as it happens, angus & julia stone are playing in lille ce soir but it’s sold out

Plan for the day is to attack my inbox for an hour or two, pack lightly for an overnight, drive to Detroit, check in to the Ferry St. Inn, spend the afternoon at the Art Institute, dinner at Mario’s, then the highlight, Herbie Hancock at Orchestra Hall.

Michigan basketball vs. Illinois: disappointing second half
Lions vs. Niners: disappointing second half
Michigan basketball vs. State: disappointing second half

It’s been that kind of week

Edited to add:

Oh, and did I mention the Paris Saint-Germain vs. Stade Brestois draw last Sunday after PSG went up 2–0? Disappointing second half.

When Arno Penzias was VP of Research at Bell Labs, if you came to his attention for doing something good, he'd send you a little something—a candy bar, a book of his, or—if you were lucky—a 3K T-shirt. My shirt isn't accessible at the moment, and the only photo of me I have available right now was taken in front of Hut 6 at Bletchley Park! It's festooned with “3K”—3 kelvins—and says “this is how the world began, not with a whimper but with a bang!”

Someday people posting videos on the internet will realize we have our own music playing where we are and we don’t need their poor choices clashing with them.

Today is not that day.

Power is out on the northwest side of Ann Arbor (Holyoke Lane).

It’s weird how often that happens — they have underground power. We’re all good downtown, though.

Petite question de définition :
Dans la notation CIDR, 192.44.78.0/24, est-il correct de dire que le nombre 24 représente la taille du réseau ?

peterhoneyman,
@peterhoneyman@a2mi.social avatar

@PierreM i have always thought they should have gone with the number of local bits after the slash, not the number of network bits

But I could feel them! Especially in the second piece, Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances.
