I was thinking about shopping for a nice watch and remembered I had my grandfather's old Seiko automatic sitting in a drawer. Pulled it out and it was in really bad shape. Cracked crystal, very grimy, and although it did run, there was not much of a reserve. It's not a valuable watch at all, but it does have a lot of sentimental value for me.
Well, I sent it in for a complete overhaul, and couldn't be happier with the result.
@Erich my parents gave me a nice seiko watch like this in the 70s, back when it was believed that I could be trusted with objects of value. I sure did like it, but not for long #alas
Who else learned how to drive like this? Just reacting to a projector playing a video of someone else driving. I believe it was generously called a "simulator"
@dan@ricci@kstatz12@cross i was one! but Lynn didn’t see the value in it, so that was that. (Same with my awesome collection of boxes that Apple products came in — I had so many, I was able to build a little fort out of them! they had to go, too #alas )
leaving utrecht by car — 45 kg of luggage is too much for a couple of olds to haul to the tram stop and then on and off the tram and then to the platform at utrecht centraal and then on and off the train to amsterdam centraal. (we vowed to travel light on this trip lol.)
#alas we should have booked the eurostar to lille a long time ago – of course it’s sold out, so we’ll be on the local
Plan for the day is to attack my inbox for an hour or two, pack lightly for an overnight, drive to Detroit, check in to the Ferry St. Inn, spend the afternoon at the Art Institute, dinner at Mario’s, then the highlight, Herbie Hancock at Orchestra Hall.

When Arno Penzias was VP of Research at Bell Labs, if you came to his attention for doing something good, he'd send you a little something—a candy bar, a book of his, or—if you were lucky—a 3K T-shirt. My shirt isn't accessible at the moment, and the only photo of me I have available right now was taken in front of Hut 6 at Bletchley Park! It's festooned with “3K”—3 kelvins—and says “this is how the world began, not with a whimper but with a bang!”
Someday people posting videos on the internet will realize we have our own music playing where we are and we don’t need their poor choices clashing with them.
I’m on a slow and snowy highway in an Uber headed to ARN with only a suitcase and handbag, leaving behind two colorful IKEA bags overflowing with wrapped gifts for upcoming birthdays and for under the tree. Lynn will follow me home this weekend.
oops, the maintenance performed required some paperwork that didn’t get completed, so now it’s “pull back” to the gate for another forty minutes or so #alas
