When I first came to Japan, they were transitioning from the first #500yen#coin to the second, and we were missing trains because we showed up with no time to spare and the ticket machine would only take one coin while we had the other. Vending machines would only take one not the other, and it was high drama. Now, they've changed again to a new 500 yen coin, and it seems so much less dramatic. I think because I don't buy things from vending machines or pay train fares in cash anymore.
