  1. How does the assigned listening confirm or disrupt your take on late period Dead?

  2. Garcia suffered lyrical lapses and guitar dexterity difficulties in this period. When listening to these isolated, song-free, “Terraplayin’ Jams,” what is your assessment of the band’s lead guitarist? Is he struggling to express himself or lead the plot?

@mrcompletely Just listened to this version. You're right - an absolutely peak melodrama for this song. Script and music for an episode of a silent western serial. Bobby sings the intertiles and the band soundtracks it.

standing & saluting, sam cutler has left the building. the 's chief tour architect from 1970-1974 (& the ' road manager in '69), sam helped turn the dead from an underground band into a wild success. a charming rogue & ace storyteller, his memoir "you can't always get what you want" is very recommended. sam was also a regular deadcast guest/correspondent. i'm going to miss him a lot.

The new Summer 1973 Grateful Dead boxed set brushes up against the brief flourishing of what's come to be known as "The Phil Jazz Jam." It's probably as close as the band ever came to an organized approach to a Davis/Coltrane zone. This is my favorite version (6/24/73 Portland).

Following this conversation, I've had 7/16-17/76 (Orpheum, SF) in my car, via Dave's Picks 18.

After a long time of barely listening to the year, I'm happy to be reunited with the easy-going/sleepy/careful playing, as well as the vocal qualities we discussed.

I had a lot of '76 tapes in my early going, so I'm also getting great Proustian whiffs of my life ~35 years ago.
