I tend to post a lot of pictures taken while hiking. Also flowers and whatnot. I really only do day hikes though, back and hip can’t handle the ground like it used to.

This is well written and honestly the view I think most should have.
The only real thing I think should be thought about more is the advertisements. Both Facebook and Reddit already insert them as actual posts that you can interact with as if a regular person.
I would not doubt that Facebook continues this trend and ends up flooding the Fediverse with advertising anyway.
Edit: I’ve seen quite a few comments mentioning that Threads will not be available in the EU/UK. This isn’t true. Threads released for the UK at midnight of same “day” that it did in the US. Also Facebook is waiting on clarification (assumption being sharing across their own services?) from the EU regulatory people.
I didn’t come to a new service just to see it get taken over by the corporate beasts who ruined the internet in general, and I am sure as hell am not going to use an instance that doesn’t care about its users....
I don’t think a single one of us came here to see it wrecked or taken over.
That being said, I do not like facebook and likely won’t stay on servers that federate with them. Especially if the instances start abiding by facebooks terms. That’s where I’m drawing the line.
That is the beauty of the Fediverse. You choose your landing and build your aggregation based off that.
A large issue I see is people coming here and expecting privacy to be default. By nature the Fediverse is actually more public than a centralized service would be. There is almost unrestricted access to what you post from anywhere within the Fediverse.
I’m almost willing to put money on the fact Facebook likely has shady stuff buried in “Threads” code. The sheer invasiveness of them just makes it hard to think otherwise.
Will +1 this recommendation. Been using it about a year now and it’s wonderful. Did require an account for awhile but they have seemingly removed that again.
