Chainweasel,

Yep, it takes about 30 years to see the effects, what we’re dealing with right now is the 1993 emissions, if we stopped using all fossil fuels right this instant things would continue to get worse well into the 2050s.

Chainweasel,

Sounds like a good way to speed up sample collapse. Eventually AI training data will include enough AI written comments and articles that the training data or “sample” will be contaminated by it resulting in training data that makes the AI worse, kind of like inbreeding in humans expressing recessive genetic disorders like diseases and birth defects. Once that happens they’ll need to find a way to accurately detect and remove AI data from the sample to continue improving the AI. But even with the early generations of AI we’re using now it’s incredibly hard to automate that with any kind of real accuracy and attempts have caught a lot of false positives and let a lot of legitimate AI generated texts through.
It’s interesting that the limiting factor on AI development may be the fact that it was released to the public before further training could be done.

Chainweasel,

I’m in EDT time and it quit for me at 1900, which is 23:00 UTC

Chainweasel,

Sync was a popular 3rd party app for Reddit. With the change in Reddit TOS that prevents 3rd party apps from accessing the site the Dev is making a new app with the same name for Lemmy

Chainweasel,

Get a lead testing kit, it's like a little marker that changes color when it detects lead. Rub it on the glass and paint and see if it picks anything up. Then you'll know for sure if it's safe or not.

Chainweasel,

I'm skeptical. It feels like political theatre. Anyone else in Russia that said anything like that would suffer from fast onset gravity poisoning, and if they're coordinating logistics with them they have contact with him. And if they have contact with him they can find him.

Chainweasel,

Yes. Some things I haven't seen mentioned yet:

Although water can't be compressed there's a few other factors.

  1. Density changes with temperature, and it's a lot colder at the bottom then the top.
  2. There are air bubbles in the water, all of it. Although atmospheric air mixing by waves is unlikely to make it all the way to the bottom, biology produces gases via several different methods and gas can be compressed, which reduces the space between water molecules and increases the density.
Chainweasel,

Edit: this was supposed to be a top level comment, not a reply. My bad

Chainweasel,

Having unlimited power means you control everything. You have no time to enjoy your power because you're constantly making sure the laws of physics stay and balance so the universe doesn't dissolve.

Chainweasel,

You conserve your angular momentum, so if you move at all in latitude the earth we'll be moving at a different speed. It would be like stepping out of a moving vehicle onto the freeway but a whole lot faster.

Chainweasel,

Don't forget irradiated by the climate wars

Chainweasel,

You can always create the community yourself

Chainweasel,

It only shows communities on the same instance as you. So you're resisted on lemmy.world so if you click "Local" it will only show you communities also hosted on lemmy.world

Chainweasel,

Similar things have happened in other underwater rescue situations and it almost always turns out to be equipment involved in the search. The sonar bouys dropped by the planes are extremely sensitive pieces of equipment.
If I had to guess, every 30 minutes or so a boat running a grid search pattern would get close enough to one of the bouys that it was able to pick up sounds from the boat. As the grid pattern took the boat further away from the bouy it wasn't able to continue to pick up the noise, and the "knocking" stopped after about 4 hours and wasn't heard again until a few days later. Then the search pattern changed, and boats started getting close to the bouys again.

Chainweasel,

Election time. Same time bot activity gets extra crazy on Reddit. Prepare for shit-tons of propaganda.

Chainweasel,

Selling Reddit accounts relies heavily on karma though, which Lemmy doesn't publicly keep track of. It's more likely they'll be used to push spam or disinformation.

Chainweasel,

Chainweasel,

Loads of it. Make sure you're searching all communities, not just local or subscribed.

[Spoilers] A Theory for Book 5

::: spoiler spoiler Across all the books something that becomes obvious if you pay attention, but is never touched on directly, Is that there is replicant drift between the GUPPI units as well as the Bobs. There's different attitudes, some are flippant, some cooperative, and some downright disrespectful....

Chainweasel,

I believe he's under contract for 6 books total at the moment but he doesn't have any plans to stop at 6. So we've got at minimum 2 more books, but likely more than that.
