A quick look inside a Cybercafe, circa 1996.

CRTs. CRTs everywhere. :)

ChronRevisited,

@retronianne @Wintermute_BBS I remember a few cybercafes in the Washington, DC, area when I lived there in the late 1990s. I used to go to a pretty nice one in Georgetown. It was expensive as anything but I didn't have home internet at the time so it was the best option available.

Let's assume they are going to do an Enterprise-G focused Trek series. They have the room in the production schedule since Section 31 is a movie and not a series, so it's a fair assumption.

So what's the story? Well, there's still one major recent Trek plot line unresolved: What is it that Queen!Jurati's Borg collective are defending the Federation against?

Speculation: We know of only one force that is a) capable of crossing dimensions, b) knows what's on this side of whatever anomaly that was, and c) has motive to bother: The synthetic life forms from the end of season one of Picard.

That would give them every excuse to bring back Isa Briones as Dr. Soji Asha, which I very much want them to do. She's adorable, and a good actor to boot. Alison Pill is just a bonus. Maybe they could gain a Borg crew member who Agnes rescued, or someone from The Artifact's XBs?

ChronRevisited,

@mos_8502 The way I read the Section 31 announcement, I wonder if they won’t just do a few standalone films with the G as opposed to green lighting another series. Given the looming WGA strike and overall Hollywood belt tightening, that would seem to make more sense.

ChronRevisited,

@mos_8502 Right. But it sounded to me like Paramount management wants to pivot to a handful of streaming Trek films a year going forward and cutting back on series orders.

I expect the number of subscriptions to drop now that it’s so transparent who pays for it and how negative of a reception it has. Another brilliant move by Elon

ChronRevisited,

@MichaelKlamerus I have never understood his appeal. He’s ne of the most self-absorbed pundits out there and that’s saying something!

Oh Pu-leez can we all agree that this idea of entrepreneurship as ULTIMATE GOOD is just utter crap?

There have been plenty of founders and builders who've done good in the world, but there have been way, WAY more who raped and plundered and built their fortunes on the backs of well meaning worker bees who took up the stock options crack pipe and spent years of their lives with nothing to show for it but some promotional schwag and, if they're VERY lucky, some nice memories.

JUST GO BUILD SOMETHING AND YOUR LIFE WILL HAVE MEANING!

Yes, do that. Except very much NOT in the way you mean it. Go build something to help someone. Educate someone. Lift someone up. But maybe, just maybe it doesn't HAVE to involve money? Maybe there's more to this world and this life than moving numbers around a spreadsheet?

I'm not even against people starting companies or making money, but this RELIGIOUS ZEAL schtick just makes me want to 🤮

@feoh The culture can also ruin good entrepreneurs. Paul Brainerd, the creator of PageMaker, comes to mind. He spent years building that product and developing a customer base. But the moment Aldus went public, he said he was miserable because he was no longer working with engineers and customers. He was stuck trying to appease the stock analysts hit quarters targets. So he ended up selling the company,

ChronRevisited,

@feoh On the other hand, it is in many ways easier to develop software as a small independent shop today versus the late 80s and early 90s. For one thing, you don’t have to compete for retail shelf space. And you’re not programming for a dozen different platforms.

A few months ago at work, I screwed up data-entering a sales contract, and lost money for both the company and for the salesperson (as commission). And one thing my boss said when he was reaming out really irked me: "Our salespeople don't get salary, just commission, so that's her income you impacted!"

.......that kinda sounds like a corporate policy problem to me

I mean, I feel shitty for Salesperson, since it was my mistake. I really do.

But maybe... you know... pay people?

ChronRevisited,

@theLobdegg @ClarusPlusPlus Paying sales persons on commission is also used as a means to avoid minimum wage and overtime rules (legally).

I've been working on some content for a client website. Sometimes I wonder how the SEO people come up with these keywords. I mean, how many elevator accidents could there possibly be in Palm Beach County, Florida?

ChronRevisited,

@craigmaloney It turns out Florida Man and company just rewrote a lot of the state's personal injury laws. Which is great for someone like me who writes about the stuff. Not sure how the lawyers feel about it.

(And before you ask, none of the rule changes are especially evil or mean-spirited. A lot of is technical stuff that more or less brings Florida closer to other states. Not that people aren't complaining.)
