🏃 Today, I ran and then jogged/walked 2.25 miles at the Lawrence River Trails.

⌚ 0:31:53 (14'09/mi)
🔥 385 calories
❤️ 169 bpm
☀ 91°F
💦 40% Humidity
📈 43 ft
👥 5
🚴 2

Even though it's been 8 to 9 months, I ran the first 1.1 miles before alternating between jogging and walking back. It was rough and hot once I moved over to the levy, but my first run of 2023 is behind me.

Sheesh, getting a admin behind a curtain is harder than I expected. It's finally coming around, but it was touch and go for about a week.

CodenameTim,

@webology It's definitely related to our specific configuration of Heroku. I can't side car a tailscale serve proxy on the web dynos because I need the resulting machine's DNS to be static for the operations team. And tailscale's funnel opens up the endpoint to the broader web, which isn't what I want either.

🤔 The more I use django-q2 with their ORM queue, the more I wish Django shipped with a default task queue like Rails and other frameworks do.

🚀 Does it have the best API? No, but it just works, it's straightforward to use, and I'm a few months in, and it's been rock solid for a half dozen+ projects of mine.

OK, it might be a bit rough but, I pushed the first version of the django-template-partials package I talked about @djangoconeurope. 🚀

v23.1 is available on PyPI now. Check the README for instructions. I really want something like this in the DTL. Let's do this 💃

@carlton @djangoconeurope 🚀 You're crushing it! Very cool.

Side note, you should share this on the forum.

I wrote up a walk through on migrations. I try to show how they work, how you can get into trouble and how to recover.

Sat morning thought:

Could migrations be improved if we store a hash of the migration file itself in the django_migrations table to help identify when a person changes a migration file after it's been applied?

CodenameTim,
@CodenameTim@fosstodon.org avatar

@webology that is a lot of trust that makemigrations will do the right thing.

CodenameTim,

Ack. My streak of consecutive months with a blog post has come to an end at 7. On the plus side, that's much better than the previous record of 2 I set back in 2013.

I'm starting the new streak with an easy one.

We’re offering a new packaged service to write your tests for you. Aimed at companies that either aren’t testing or feel like they aren’t doing it well. Any feedback appreciated! https://www.revsys.com/teststart/

CodenameTim,
@CodenameTim@fosstodon.org avatar

@frank a reasonable from my perspective, (dev who would need to convince executives) I'd like to know the variety of tests you're offering. My impression is that this is for standard unit tests.

Would you be willing to do other tests such as be playwright integration hooked into CD to smoke test the app after deployment? Or load test / stress testing?

🏡 I'm not sure why listening to the "Decluttering at the Speed of Life

Wow someone stole the 40m band, the Aurora net basically evaporated, less than 20 checkins vs. over a hundred normally. Looking at NOAA space weather... yup, M5.1 solar flare just hit the atmosphere, that'll do it. "Minor radio blackout" indeed.

CodenameTim,
@CodenameTim@fosstodon.org avatar

@danderson how would you determine that without the government / internet?

CodenameTim,
@CodenameTim@fosstodon.org avatar

@danderson alright, that's pretty cool. It seemed like an interesting problem for a future dystopian scenario. Thank you for the explanations, that was really interesting!

Out of frustration, I adopted adding "--skip-checks" today to a Django project, and performance increased 1000000 billionity infinity times to the moon and back. (It shaves off 10 to 30 seconds on reloading)

🤔 This project has two apps and is about as vanilla as they come. While I suspect I am seeing a bug, is anyone else out there seeing a huge local development performance increase when disabling them?

CodenameTim,
@CodenameTim@fosstodon.org avatar

@webology Is it possible it's a migrations check?

@webology debugging problems is my jam. Can't promise a solution, but I'll have an answer 🙃
