Reminder that you now have less than one month (per the timeline at https://pyfound.blogspot.com/2024/05/psf-board-election-dates-for-2024.html) to ensure that you are registered as a PSF supporting, contributing, or managing member in order to be eligible to vote in this year's board elections. I suspect that many of the people that follow me on Mastodon meet the criteria for contributing and managing membership, even if they aren't already enrolled as such yet. Read more and find sign up links at https://www.python.org/psf/membership-faq/#what-membership-classes-are-there.

🛜 I have owned an Orbi Mesh/Satellite router setup for over five years and have had almost zero issues with it.

While in Pittsburgh, my garage satellite node died and is forever in "Config Sync" mode.

I spent several hours on it today, but it's looking more and more like its 5 GHz band is no longer working.

(Venting to the universe, not looking for a UniFi reply person to make a pitch. I have ZERO interest.)

@webology @mpirnat I recently added a couple of MoCA adapters (https://www.gocoax.com/ma2500d) to my network and have been super happy with them. All things equal, I'd rather have ethernet throughout the house, but this was a pretty great alternative without all the installation hassle.

I have a longer rant about this that I will write up at some point, but here's the TL;DR: yes, you should attend conference talks, and please stop telling other attendees (especially those new to the community) to categorically skip them. Supporting conference speakers and the staff and volunteers that work to make the talks possible is a very cool decision.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@ehmatthes I look forward to reading it! I see all of these "why would you go to the talk if it's recorded?" comments, and I can't help but view that through the lens of live theater and music still existing in a post- radio and television world. Not to mention the fact that recording errors do occur.

@xahteiwi It happens. Sometimes videos get lost via unforeseen circumstances, even by professionals.

Is there a name for the law of oversimplified "justs"? That whole thing where someone says "why don't you just..." to a problem they assume is simple despite others with deep experience in the subject matter telling them that it is, in fact, complex?

had 2,551 in-person attendees and was "sold out”

had 3,393 (Checked-in people).

Anyone know why the tickets were restricted to 1,234 fewer in 2024? The venue seemed massive so should have had room.

I'm genuinely curious what the difference was. 48% more seats in 2019 is a big difference.

@lorenipsum As a point of comparison and contrast, I'm pretty used to seeing last-minute bumps in registration for regional conferences. I wonder if there has been demand for those late registrations that's less visible for a conference that regularly sold out (some times two months prior) pre-pandemic. Data about post-sellout ticket demand is probably spotty at best, but I'm sure some of us could dig up graphs of registration over time for regional events.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@lorenipsum Yes, that's definitely a factor (and often by design, i.e. many regional events want to focus on their local communities). I'm just curious if there has also been some late demand for PyCon US that's been impossible to act on because the conference is already sold out. (Tried to check a few 2019 and earlier blog posts, and it does seem that six to eight weeks out is a common enough sellout time frame.)

You know what happens when you publicly shame someone for sharing covid test results? People stop sharing them. The test results don't change, just the ability of other people to learn that they may have been exposed and to test and take precautions themselves. Public shaming may make you feel superior, but it does nothing for harm reduction at best.

Left from about 33 hrs ago. Had a scratchy throat this morning w/ a negative test and just now have a positive test.

I went out with various groups, unmasked, throughout the weekend. This was a risk I was willing to take. Still, I'm glad I was wearing a mask in the convention center around folks who did not choose to take that same risk.

I'm gonna go rest now.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@tylerdave Sorry to see that Dave. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Thank you for sharing so that others can stay informed on whether they may have been exposed. Rest up.

Hey, so I pretty rarely blog, but this post that I shared here a couple days ago (https://www.jonafato.com/2024/05/20/conference-organizing-isnt-a-trap) was one of those things I couldn't get out of my head otherwise. It would mean a lot to me if you kept the sentiment in mind for future occasions when you see people getting pushed away from organizing communities of any sort. And if you legitimately feel trapped in your role, please reach out so we can help find the right people to help lighten that burden.

If you're writing docs or example code, remember to use placeholder values that are specifically designated as such, or to use resources like domain names that you control if you absolutely must. Linking to example.com is a safer choice than a domain that someone else may own today or in the future.

I met some new folks at PyCon US this year, but with so many attendees, there was not nearly enough time, and I surely missed a bunch of people. Who's doing cool stuff in the Python community that I should be following? Who's doing cool and important behind-the-scenes work that doesn't get talked about much?

(Boosts appreciated.)

QR codes are nice as an addition to URLs on conference presentation slides, but they're not great as a replacement. If you're using a QR code to link to a website, please share human-readable URLs on your slides as well.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@box464 Update-able short urls are nice for this. I know a bunch of people that use linktree and similar tools for this sort of info, too. My main issue here was QR codes displayed without any sort of URL, so I have no way of seeing the content at all without holding up my phone in the middle of a conference presentation.

Periodic reminder that https://github.com/python-organizers/conferences/ exists as a community-maintained list of Python conferences to help speakers, sponsors, and attendees keep track of events. If you know of a Python conference with published dates (and perhaps other details) that is not already tracked in that repository, pull requests are always welcome.

There are still a ton of Python folks who I tend to describe as "people I've definitely been in the same room with but not actually met". Hoping to actually say hello to many of them this week at PyCon US. Feel free to ping me if you'd like to make sure we find a time to meet each other.

Weather for #PyConUS looking decidedly not amenable to outdoor socializing. Boooo.

jonafato,
@jonafato@mastodon.social avatar

@bitprophet Not with that attitude. I'm not above eating in the rain.

Seriously though, hoping at least one of the hotels has a decent courtyard or something.

@hynek The lack of important features after that update was certainly a fun surprise.
