Simple curiosity ... does anyone recognise this? Is it meaningful?

Seen on a bus, photo by permission of the owner.

@mndflayr I wonder if it's a Game of Thrones thing or something, some sort of fantasy game or film merch.

It might be a simple substitution cipher into the runes of the relevant fantasy world.

Or it might just be a designer saying "This looks cool".

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@timhutton So ... simple substitution cipher?

Hmm.

Suspicions confirmed. Good work ... thank you!

The irrationals are those exactly those reals that are a different distance from every rational.

@soaproot I think I'd need to have a Very Hard Think to follow that ... and I don't have time just now.

I am, however, interested to see where you go with it.

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@soaproot Simply the time taken to unpick the sentence, and also you have this concept of "apartness" that I can't grok based on what you've written.

And I don't have time.

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@soaproot Exactly so, although this can (as you no doubt know) all be stated less formally.

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@soaproot Nice.

I have another theorem that you might be interested in. It has a longer setup, specifically because I want to share the unexpectedness I felt about the result. The result itself is easy to prove in the usual informal manner ... perhaps you'd be interested in formalising it.

(An answer of "no" is, of course, acceptable)

OK. The good news is that I know what my @BigMathsJam talk is going to be this year.

The bad news is: I need a guillotine

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp @BigMathsJam Do you mean the type for cutting paper, or the type for cutting vegetables (or necks)?

@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

Bother.

It looks like I mis-timed things and I'm going to be promoted to the next league in Duolingo.

I did not want that. 8-(

@Martin_Whitworth I decided from the start to allow them to do their gamification and just go along for the ride.

I don't care too much, and occasionally roll my eyes at it, but I let them do it without getting too frustration, and the "Streak" thing is a good way to help me stay on track.

People who moved to the UK from somewhere else: is Argos weird, or is it charming?

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp To me it was ... unexpected. But then it was logical, though still a bit unusual.

It's certainly not charming, but never tipped over into weird.

For today’s Worldle, Sydney is the alleged capital of Australia. Hoo boy.

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@danpmoore What?

That's ... bizarre.

Do you have a link? I don't play worldle ...

ColinTheMathmo,
@ColinTheMathmo@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@danpmoore OK, I went hunting, found it, found how to get it to ask me for the capital, entered "Sydney", and it marked me as wrong.

So ... colour me confused.

That took longer than intended ... but persistence paid off and I got there in the end.

'Jail' and 'Prison' are synonyms. But 'Jailer' and 'Prisoner' are antonyms.

ColinTheMathmo,

@iris This is an interesting distinction of which I was unaware. It actually seems to be a dialectic difference ... not everyone I know makes this distinction.

But yes, they're different (sort of) and yes ... you are being pedantic!
