Fulltime freelance provider of outreach and enhancement in maths ... I talk a lot. About maths.

I talk about other stuff too, like ballroom dancing, juggling, unicycling, education, engineering, software, and "other things".

But mostly about maths.

Not sure how to feel about elementary arithmetic being classified as journalism: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/25/gamestop-surges-after-fetching-933-million-from-stock-sale.html

From the article:

"GameStop made nearly $933.4 million by selling 45 million shares, the struggling videogame retailer said on Friday ... GameStop did not disclose the price at which it sold the shares, but based on Reuters calculations, they were sold at an average price of $20.74 each."

Any “constitutional” or legal questions about the general election?

Ask below and I will reply if I can.

(I used to do this sort of thing on Twitter and I thought I would give it a go here.)

when I release a zine, I always make a version that looks good when printed at home on a black-and-white printer

so today I'm at a cafe reviewing the black and white version of the git zine

b0rk,
@b0rk@jvns.ca avatar

I think my favourite thing about the print-your-own-zine-at-home thing is that sometimes when I release a new zine, someone will send me a photo 30 minuter later of the zine, printed out, on their desk.

you can't do that with shipping!

I managed to catch the bucket bike's odometer on a nice round number, 1000km!

That's just over 100km per month since we got it.

I went to the aquarium today and there was a guy in a wetsuit pushing a penguin around on a box, back and forth through the water

someone asked why and he says, "yeah, she kinda just really likes riding on the box"

I'm still not over it y'all

I may have said already that I think I don't have quite enough paintings for the marginalia.

Photography is an important archaeological discipline, and when we visited Lindisfarne castle a couple of weeks ago, I found a camera of about the right era ..

It's a very limited palette, only earth colours and ultramarine. Not finished, but a start.

Microsoft Teams continues to reveal its true nature as a billion sprint goals in a trenchcoat:

When you attach an image to a post, it's saved at the top of the Sharepoint folder belonging to the channel. (So the "files" tab becomes a cluttered mess, but that's not what I'm cross about now)

As well as restrictions on valid filenames, filenames of attachments have to be unique.

So if you've attached drawing.png once before, and upload another drawing.png, Teams asks if you want to replace the original, or keep both. If you keep both, it adds (1) to the filename.

... unless there's already a "drawing (1).png", in which case it asks you AGAIN what you want to do.

Is there a Big Brain Cloud Services reason it can't automatically find the smallest number that works?

“Remarkably, food production doubled under the agrivoltaic system. And because water evaporation from the plants cooled the panels, the solar system itself generated 3% more electricity during the summer, showing how both food and solar production can perform better when done in collaboration”.

We don't know where it goes. We don't really care. -- Bob Ross

@ColinTheMathmo
NASA were always dubious of Bob Ross' experiment of satellite tracking via quick painting of their paths just as they zoomed by overhead, but when he said "We don't know where it goes. We don't really care", that was the day that NASA had had enough, and fired poor gentle bewildered Bob.

Pals, what's the least egregious TV I can buy today, in the UK?
I want as little "smart" internet-connected nonsense as possible. Not bothered about 4k or massive size, but it should sound and look good.

That is, what's the Brother laser printer of TVs?

Joshua,
@Joshua@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp We had the same problem. We bought a 32" TV and all the reviews said that it was the "perfect second tv". The idea of a second TV is alien to us.

Joshua,
@Joshua@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@christianp Also we bought a "smart" TV, because there are basically no non-smart TVs. And we use the app from the public broadcaster. And of course after two years this app doesn't work anymore and isn't maintained. So we had to buy a chrome cast, to make our "smart TV" even "smarter".

Our university deployed a mail filter that rewrites URLs in emails to redirect them via a service that checks for bad websites. Somebody clever worked out that PGP-signed emails are exempt from the rewrite rule, so now people are starting their emails with "BEGIN PGP MESSAGE" even though they haven't used PGP at all, just to fool the filter 😂

Anybody sending malware links has probably also worked out that trick by now, thereby rendering the entire filter pointless

One frustrating thing about academic talks is how 'all the same' they are

Everyone has the same title slide
Everyone uses slides with too much text
Everyone tries to project the same intelligent, authorative persona
Everyone uses long, complicated words unnecessarily.
