Big fan of SBC gaming, open source engine recreations/source ports, gaming in general, alternative operating systems, and all things modding.
Trying to post and comment often in an effort to add to Lemmy’s growth.

I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse
I use ad blockers and open source privacy focused software whenever I can but occasionally I have to use computers that don’t belong to me or an older phone where my usual applications aren’t installed and seeing all the advertisements just feels dirty and dystopian....
What is something you wanted as a kid and bought now that you're an adult with disposable income?
I really wanted a modded Xbox 360 when I was younger because I thought being able to play ‘backed up’ games and having a custom dashboard was really neat....
You are going to be trapped in a room for 12 hours with a mid 2000s office desktop with no internet connection and an external hard drive; what are you putting on the hard drive?
I’ve got some DOOM WADs I have been meaning to play so I would probably grab Trench Foot, Total Chaos, and the sequel to Ashes 2063, Ashes: Afterglow with a portable install of GZDoom to play them....
Does Harry Potter only know fifth grade math?
He was abducted by Hagrid when he turned 11 so that would place him maybe around the fifth or sixth grade....
What would you bring to an adult show and tell?
I don’t necessarily mean adult as in NSFW....
What's the most expensive thing you broke as a kid and what's the story behind it?
Mine was our CRT TV. I would rapidly push the power button on and off because I thought the picture coming and going looked cool but eventually it fell inside of the TV. I think I later stuck a magnet on the TV....
What games had easy soft locks that prevented you from either progressing or getting a true ending?
The thought came to mind after reading a recent post about Baldurs Gate 3 here but it reminded me of the Japense only PSX game Mizzurna Falls where if you don’t perform a certain action early in the game you are prevented from getting a true ending. While this might not be a traditional soft lock because you can still progress...
What part of a game you enjoy replaying do you dislike replaying?
I love the original Hotline Miami but I’m not a big fan of the boss fights like the ones in Neighbors (Biker) and Deadline (Van Driver). I find it kind of slows down the game and limits the strategies you can take....
What are some movies that are best experienced going in completely blind?
I feel like everyone has had a movie partially spoiled by a trailer but I also feel like descriptions, movie posters, and even genre tags can be a give away and make a plot twist or scene less impactful....
What are your thoughts on USB storage drives that have keypad encryption? (leminal.space)
It seems like the benefits are having the device lock/wipe itself after a set amount of attempts in case of a brute force attack and not having to run software to decrypt the drive on the device you plug it into....
What are some games you find yourself frequently coming back to?
I was going to say replaying but I feel like that limits the question to games like Prey or Fallout New Vegas that have endings and games like The Sims 2 or Cities Skylines where you can play indefinitely end up excluded....
What show took you the longest to get into?
I recently decide to watch Curb Your Enthusiasm and I only really started to enjoy the show after season four....
What technical issues did you ignore for an extended period of time?
On my old phone I had an issue with the proximity sensor and front facing camera. This led me to holding my phone backwards to take photos and being unable to hang up phone calls....
What games have you played due to FOMO?
FOMO stands for Fear Of Missing Out....
What did you get up to during the COVID quarantine?
I was in school so when that was put on hold I essentially played video games like it was a job. I remember vividly playing Grand Theft Auto IV in one sitting for the Liberty City Minute achievement and I’m pretty sure I played through Master Chief Collection....
One thing I hope to see in the Fediverse is people engaging with old content
This is a thought I had mostly to do with Lemmy but I feel likes it’s relevant elsewhere in Fediverse....
What were some movies you had to look up explanations of after watching?
Beau is Afraid was the last one I recall. I think it was mostly the latter half of the movie where I started to get a bit confused and needed the ending explained to me....
What did you get into as it was dying or otherwise on its way out?
I feel like I do this a lot with podcasts. I started watching the Gus and Eddy podcast and finished it about a month before the last episode was released for example....
What shows had awkward or otherwise poor returns from cancelations?
When watching a show a while after it’s released you can sometimes tell when a show was canceled because a season will end on a big (occasionally spiteful) event....
Are there tools that exist to anonymize writing styles?
I feel like with the rise of AI something that anonymizes writing styles should exist. For example it could look for differences in American versus British spelling like color versus colour or contextual things like soccer versus football and make edits accordingly. ChatGPT could be fed a prompt that says “Rewrite the...
If you like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Silicon Valley you might want to check out Mythic Quest (www.imdb.com)
I feel like it leans more into the latter as a kind of tech industry comedy. It stars Rob McElhenney who played Mac in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and I feel like a lot of the humor his character adds is present in Mythic Quest....
What are some neat things you carry around that come in handy?
I carry a powerbank and various USB C adapters so if someone’s device dies I can help them out. It is a lot cheaper and smaller than carrying around seven different cables....
What Steam achievement are you most proud of?
Mine is probably the Liberty City Minute achievement for Grand Theft Auto IV. I think technically you have 30 hours to beat the main storyline but I managed to power through and beat the entire game in one sitting....
Did the premise of an entity approaching you only when it's not being viewed originate with Doctor Who's Weeping Angels?
The Weeping Angels apparently originated with Steven Moffat seeing a statue of a weeping angel in a structure in a cemetery and returning later to find out it was gone. At least according to this RadioTimes article. They first appeared in 2007 in the episode Blink....
What's the history behind cam rips of movies and where have they typically came from?
I’ve seen a few throughout my life at friend’s houses as a kid during the age of Limewire. Typically they were pretty good quality even though you’d see the odd person get up from their seat or hardcoded subtitles. Lately I’ve been curious about the history behind them and how they came to be....
