What's the history behind cam rips of movies and where have they typically came from?
I’ve seen a few throughout my life at friend’s houses as a kid during the age of Limewire. Typically they were pretty good quality even though you’d see the odd person get up from their seat or hardcoded subtitles. Lately I’ve been curious about the history behind them and how they came to be....
One thing I hope to see in the Fediverse is people engaging with old content
This is a thought I had mostly to do with Lemmy but I feel likes it’s relevant elsewhere in Fediverse....
SimCity 4 modders are cracking its deepest recesses in ever greater numbers, enabling extensive new changes (www.pcgamer.com)
When was the last time you played The Sims and what did you do? (leminal.space)
I moved my Sim into a house boat so he could escape his several illegitimate children but the lag got so bad living at sea I stopped playing.
I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse
I use ad blockers and open source privacy focused software whenever I can but occasionally I have to use computers that don’t belong to me or an older phone where my usual applications aren’t installed and seeing all the advertisements just feels dirty and dystopian....
What are some neat things you carry around that come in handy?
I carry a powerbank and various USB C adapters so if someone’s device dies I can help them out. It is a lot cheaper and smaller than carrying around seven different cables....
What are some movies with notable director's commentary?
Notable can mean many things. Maybe it was high quality, insightful, and provided context for a more artistic scene. Maybe they teased a cut scene that would have radically shifted the tone of the movie. Maybe it was funny. Maybe the director absolutely hated what they produced and is only providing narration because of a...
What are some games where the DLC felt better than the base game?
The three examples I could think of are Fallout 4, The Outer Worlds, and Cyberpunk 2077....
Paradox of Hope, a Metro-style VR game, has been removed from the Steam Store following a copyright claim (leminal.space)
I came across this news after watching a Virtual Insider video with the clickbait title This VR Game No Longer Exists. The news did come out about a month ago though but I haven’t seen it posted on Lemmy yet. A 47 second trailer for the game can be found here. In it you can see some elements that do exist in the Metro series...
What caused your niche interest/hobby to blow up in terms of popularity?
It could be a small surge but something where you noticed a sudden influx of people. Maybe a game you were playing that got quite popular after it was streamed or there was free weekend on Steam....
What would happen if I put sandpaper in my printer?
This is a late night intrusive thought I had. I feel like it would depend on the printer and type of printer but I’m wondering how messed up it would get....
What happens when you soak a hard boiled egg in alcohol?
I tried searching online but I’ve mostly gotten results about cocktails that have raw egg in them or science experiments that use uncooked eggs....
Does Harry Potter only know fifth grade math?
He was abducted by Hagrid when he turned 11 so that would place him maybe around the fifth or sixth grade....
CHDK and Magic Lantern are open source projects that unlock additional features for Cannon cameras
From the About Magic Lantern page...
Can you imagine if Sims with a low cooking skill misused appliances and came up with trash recipes instead of just creating low quality dishes? (leminal.space)
I’m just imaging Sims shoving hotdogs in a coffee maker, fish in the dishwasher, and a turkey in the microwave for 10 hours....

When people post YouTube links, is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube, firefox, or downloading adblockers?
When people post YouTube links… is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube? Because when I click on a YouTube link and I’m on my phone and it immediately gives me an ad it’s pissing me off like in a huge way… is there a way to bypass ads without an ad blocker on my phone
The cycle continues (leminal.space)
This makes me think of all the multi-level houses I made in the Sims 3 with an elevator. The combination of a large family and themed floors frequently meant Sims passing out or being late for school/work because they were busy waiting for the elevator.
What were some movies you had to look up explanations of after watching?
Beau is Afraid was the last one I recall. I think it was mostly the latter half of the movie where I started to get a bit confused and needed the ending explained to me....

Was looking at Quest 3, maybe I'll get PSVR2 instead? (kbin.run)
Since the AVP came out I've been yearning for a path back into VR. Quest 3 is the obvious answer and I've even had it in my amazon cart, hovering over the "purchase" button at least twice now. However, I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger and now I'm starting to take a closer look at the PSVR2....
