What's the history behind cam rips of movies and where have they typically came from?

I’ve seen a few throughout my life at friend’s houses as a kid during the age of Limewire. Typically they were pretty good quality even though you’d see the odd person get up from their seat or hardcoded subtitles. Lately I’ve been curious about the history behind them and how they came to be....

I guess it doesn’t add a ton to the conversation but I wanted to express my thanks because I like articles about modding

I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse

I use ad blockers and open source privacy focused software whenever I can but occasionally I have to use computers that don’t belong to me or an older phone where my usual applications aren’t installed and seeing all the advertisements just feels dirty and dystopian....

What are some movies with notable director's commentary?

Notable can mean many things. Maybe it was high quality, insightful, and provided context for a more artistic scene. Maybe they teased a cut scene that would have radically shifted the tone of the movie. Maybe it was funny. Maybe the director absolutely hated what they produced and is only providing narration because of a...

Paradox of Hope, a Metro-style VR game, has been removed from the Steam Store following a copyright claim (leminal.space)

I came across this news after watching a Virtual Insider video with the clickbait title This VR Game No Longer Exists. The news did come out about a month ago though but I haven’t seen it posted on Lemmy yet. A 47 second trailer for the game can be found here. In it you can see some elements that do exist in the Metro series...

When people post YouTube links, is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube, firefox, or downloading adblockers?

When people post YouTube links… is there a cool open source way to watch it on mobile without going through youtube? Because when I click on a YouTube link and I’m on my phone and it immediately gives me an ad it’s pissing me off like in a huge way… is there a way to bypass ads without an ad blocker on my phone

Oh yeah there’s lots. I feel like a lot of people use ReVanced but I’ve never tried it. I use NewPipe because it allows me to locally export my subscriptions and use the open source frontend Invidious on desktop.

A bit of a personal preference. I imagine one of the piracy megathreads would have a list of community favorites. FMHY or the one on dbz0 would be worth looking at.

I think so. Installing Linux was a hurdle for a lot of people but having it by default on the Steam Deck was a bit of a game changer. Installing Windows on it versus figuring out how to use something Lutris probably takes a similar amount of effort for average casual user.

I feel like it also helps that Windows isn’t very controller friendly, in my experience, and an increasing amount of people are looking for that for couch gaming and viewing media.

There’s some pretty obscure ones to that came and went in a hurry like a glass of milk.

I feel like some have also been claimed for general use. I don’t really associate Pepe memes with the alt right anymore

Was looking at Quest 3, maybe I'll get PSVR2 instead? (kbin.run)

Since the AVP came out I've been yearning for a path back into VR. Quest 3 is the obvious answer and I've even had it in my amazon cart, hovering over the "purchase" button at least twice now. However, I just can't bring myself to pull the trigger and now I'm starting to take a closer look at the PSVR2....

  • I can see myself playing around with productivity and virtual monitors for my Mac.

You might be able to do that on a PSVR 2 either officially or unofficially through mods soon enough.
