There's been some drama around the Mac Iterm2 terminal app. The author released a "major release" with AI features - and strangely got a pile of negativity. Now he's making it a plugin but I don't think he's happy:
I should note that normally I have a lot of sympathy for open source maintainers dealing with grumpy users.
If it has been "I've listened to feedback, I don't agree that this is a huge thing but I can see how opinions differ" that'd be fine.
But insulting users with legitimate concerns? That's a huge nope for me
@ibboard@Korny Lol:

There is some part of my brain that is always trying to figure out if I am consuming AI or human generated content. I wish there is a way to know before hand.
A few weeks ago I installed the Glendale aurora alerts app, and naturally it's now going a bit berserk.
Trouble is, I have no idea of any of the scales so it's hard to tell if these alerts are "pretty lights in the sky" or "day of the Triffids prelude" or "imminent apocalypse"...
@Korny Saw the Aurora Borealis from a coastal part in Werribee last night. Faint cloud like light low in the sky plys occasional patches of red higher up. So with some city light & through spectacles, very faint. Streaks mostly visible in peripheral vision.
Will head fully to the Bass Strait coast tonight if it looks promising.
Nice photos from Brunswick accumulate light to show colour that was not visible to the eye.
@DavidPenington
Sadly too much light pollution here, and couldn't get out into the real countryside.
Thankfully also no signs of Triffids this morning.
I'm always a bit amused by registration pages for free wifi portals. Nobody is ever going to make every person go through a validation workflow to connect (how would they?) so fake email addresses will always work.
Seems Khan has #LondonMayor in the bag, despite lots of rumours of it being at risk.
This seems to be such a common social media thing - lots of people saying he's probably safe, but the handful of people saying he's in danger get a lot more airtime as it's just more interesting.
I'm not sure if it's doomsayers, or misguided hope from people desperate trying to boost #ulez hatred. #ukpol
Strange - I happened to look in the "blocked users" section of my mastodon client and saw a few people, I have no idea how they got there. Mostly pretty stagnant accounts - is there some way people can get auto blocked?
I've wondered for a while now - is there any research on map routing algorithms that allow for significantly longer routes, which meet other criteria like "more peaceful" or "simpler" or "less pollution"?
The excellent #CycleStreets app (based on #OpenStreetMap data) allows for quiet/balanced/fast routes, but "quiet" isn't quite what I want.
For example part of my route from work to Euston could go via the canal around Regent's Park, but that option is never suggested as it is 10min longer:
@Korny I'd like a mode that caters for larger vehicles. It's always fun being routed down a tiny street when you're towing a caravan or driving a truck
@Korny Bikerouter has tons of profiles, some of which prefer less traffic, etc. In the end it's just a cost factor. I suspect one problem is that it's not possible to assign costs to things that are just in the vicinity vs. the actual track though.
@Korny I always enjoy Prof Olsen's commentary whenever he references back to that scene in Exploring LotR: when Gandalf pulls Sam in, it's "the infenestration of Sam".
Only time I've ever seen that word, but it's perfect.
