Here’s a good alternative to TV Tropes that people don’t talk enough about: allthetropes.org/wiki/Main_Page

Edit: the page for this series isn’t developed, but it exists. It was built up once, and it can be done again: Go give it some love.

I’m guessing this is supposed to be a brainslug gif, but all I see is blank.

I’m basically indifferent to Instagram (IDK what it’s about) and I’ve hated Twitter since I first learned about its high concept. Twitter makes people stupid.

The fact that the company that manages TikTok is insisting on maintaining the power structure that allows for influence by the CCP makes that claim incredibly suspicious.

Y’know Orwell wrote about how warping definitions was a tool of authoritarianism. Typical ML behavior, tbh.

First, that’s materially different. Second, yes; I think Facebook giving the government our information without a fight is bad. What, did you think I would suddenly think the dissolution of our privacy was good because it was an American company?

I feel like you only think a country is a democracy if it says it’s a people’s republic while it commits genocide.

We’re not talking about subpoenas.

Have you considered reading a book instead of trusting your pastor at their word?

I studied Christian religious theory before I was an atheist, and I continue to do so because I find mythology interesting. The theory you presented falls far outside of contemporary Christian beliefs, any text of Christian scripture, and any historical Christian doctrine that I’ve ever read or heard of. How did you form that opinion, and what made you think it was a good idea to present it as fact?

Arianism is the belief that Jesus was a creation of God, the same way as the world or the creatures that exist in his creation. Nicene theology holds that Jesus as an entity existed in spirit coeternally as a part of God, but neither doctrine states that Joseph was his father.

Edit; minor correction: If my understanding is correct, Arianism specifically states that Jesus existed before the world, so there’s not really an interpretation that he was created at the conception.

This again raises the question of why you keep making these claims.

Correct; Nicene Theology holds that Jesus is both God and The Son. Denying either is heretical to contemporary Christian beliefs.

I use the inverse of this strategy; whenever I figure out that I’m wrong about something, I immediately admit I was mistaken and change my position. All I have to do is make sure my logic is impeccable and I’ll almost always win an argument.

It’s a skill. The better you are at logic and the more you interrogate your philosophical foundations, the more of a leg-up you have. I got lucky by being born as a stereotypically logical autistic person and growing up as an incredibly introspective child. Thinking a lot about why you think what you do, what you might be wrong about, and planning out the kinds of responses that you should have if you get new information really help. It also helps to have a profoundly strong belief that you are able to change your mind easily; simply believing that makes it more likely to be true.

I’m a man, and I agree. Humans are more dangerous than bears, and bears are less likely to hurt you so long as you know what you’re doing, when compared to a malicious human.

N.H. lawmaker opposes new marriage bill, says teens are of ‘ripe, fertile’ age (www.masslive.com)

“If we continually restrict the freedom of marriage as a legitimate social option, when we do this to people who are a ripe, fertile age and may have a pregnancy and a baby involved, are we not in fact making abortion a much more desirable alternative, when marriage might be the right solution for some freedom-loving...

I’ve always thought it odd that people would ever reference nature when contemplating morality. Nature is evil. Beautiful, able to give rise to glorious wonders, and yet the most abjectly evil thing to exist. If your best argument is an appeal to nature, then you’re probably wrong.

I’m glad I see more people these days making arguments the way you are; granting the opponent’s entire premise and then showing it doesn’t matter. It’s an absolutely deviating rhetorical tactic, and one I’m fond of.

Leate_Wonceslace,

I don’t think Marriage should have any legal basis whatsoever. It’s a religious ritual, and I don’t think the government should get involved in it. With that said, since marriage does have a legal basis allowing minors to be married is an utterly deranged practice.

Is there a name for this sort of object? I need something like this, but don't know what to type into the webs (lemmy.world)

I’m going to convert my computer chair from pneumatic to static. I’m currently using plastic clasps that are held on with jubilee clips, but they’re not great and need replaced (I’m a heavy lad). A sturdy metal version would be better....
