Google search has a new, but somewhat hidden "Web" tab that clears out all the junk and just gives you a list of text-based results. You know, like how Search was before it started sucking.

https://www.pcworld.com/article/2334403/google-now-has-a-web-search-button-for-text-only-results-without-the-junk.html

I'm begging, screaming out into the ether: someone give me a Chrome extension that forces this as the default search in the URL bar.

    @JenMsft In Attenborough voice:

    "When the glacier receded, a wealth of perfectly preserved fossils was revealed, waiting for scientists to unlock the secrets of the past."

    @AAKL I'm okay with the subscription model as a concept, at least as long as I retain the option of buying games individually, like the current streaming movie model.

    But paying for access to a single publisher's games, even a huge one like EA or Ubisoft, just isn't appealing in any way. It certainly doesn't help that Ubisoft is infamous for applying the same template to game after game and churning out repetitive yearly franchise entries.

    🌧🌡 SIDEWALKS MAY BE ICY

    🥾 You need boots. Grip soles made of rubber or neoprene.

    🐧 Do the penguin walk. Imagine you are a penguin, arms out, body centered over each foot.

    👣 Take short steps. Do the snow shuffle!

    🤚🏾 No pockets. Keep your hands out to keep your balance.

    @BmoreCityDOT @itsshevee Only if I get to do a cute little penguin "sqwak" with each footstep.

    Gonna try to use Mastodon some more this year. I miss the bird site, or at least what the bird site used to be, but I have to be honest: more than a year after dumping it I haven't found a true replacement. I'm just leaning into my Slack instances more...which are even smaller and more insular communities, and don't really have that browsing/scrolling feel.

    @AAKL I don't doubt it! It's just a matter of establishing the habits.

    @AAKL The video will make some Xbox fans happy, and sure, I guess they need it these days. But I think it's more of a parade of IP for investors than anything else.

    "Look at all this stuff your kids recognize, we're gonna make SO much money, for reals."

    @AAKL Hey, when the god of magic AND the most powerful wizard in the world tell you to do something, you tend to listen.

    Especially when there's another god earlier in the plot who'll straight-up kill you if you tick her off.

    @AAKL Oh yeah, there are a ton of different ways to reach AN ending, which aren't THE ending (which itself comes in several variations). In the game's defense, it generally gives you several warnings on the lines of, "Hey, do this and you're going to die, right now."

    Valnet now owns three of the four sites I've worked at full-time in my writing career.

    This amorphous corporate blob seems to be tracking me like the demon in It Follows. And I didn't even get to have any kinky horror movie sex.

    @cliffwade @dcseifert Doesn't look like it's official yet, but the deal's closed and they've informed all of their new keyboard operators. I mean employees.

    MichaelCrider,
    @MichaelCrider@mastodon.social avatar

    @cliffwade @dcseifert I did leave AP shortly after Valnet acquired it, but I actually worked for How-To Geek for years before that, returning to AP for just a short time. I'm at PCWorld now.

    And I'm not going to pretend that PCWorld or other Foundry/IDG sites are perfect. But the fact that I'm here instead of there speaks for itself.

    @ppb1701 @AAKL I'm a tech writer who's covered the industry for years. I build my own keyboards and have at least some disposable income. I was a perfect switching candidate, and I went all-in with an iPhone and Apple Watch.

    I returned them a week later, because there was no way to replicate some media control/flashlight button functionality I've become dependent on after years of Android use. Old habits die hard with a vengeance.

    @AAKL @TechCrunch "Should" seems redundant, since we're not going to even if it's true.

    We all contribute to advertising profiles and algorithms, often to a much greater degree than whatever ostensible benefit we get back from free services. Are we getting paid for that? When Hell freezes over.
