Nath, to australia in Cate Blanchett, like most Australians, thinks she’s middle class. An expert on class explains why that matters
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

Compared to the circles she moves in, yeah she’s middle class. When you hobnob with the richest people on earth and you’re only personally worth a couple-hundred million dollars, I can see how you’d think of yourself as middle class.

I also think of myself as middle class. Just not quite as middle class as she is. 😁

Perspective is funny, huh?

Nath, to australianpolitics in Payman resigns from foreign affairs committees after genocide comments
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

The thing I most dislike about our politics is this notion that every member of a political party has to be some hive mind. I believe it should absolutely be normal to hold a different personal position on any given topic to that of your party. I think it should be more normal to cross the floor on votes than it is.

I disagree that she can’t serve on some committee of foreign affairs because she isn’t completely 100% behind her party’s stated position on one conflict. That’s dumb.

With one quick question to Google, I came out with two facts: about 3% of Australians are vegan (source) and Melbourne has 130 fully vegan eateries (source).

Now like I said: that was a single search, I don’t know the accuracy of those facts. I’m also no expert on running a bar. But it sounds like she did try opening a business on hard mode.

Load it in the morning. Start it an hour before you get home so it’s ready to hang when you arrive? That way, it isn’t going mankey all day.

That’s all I got.

@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

C’mon, mate. Let’s not pretend this story would have played out the same if he didn’t have guns. Police were on their way. They arrived on time to hear the last shot. If he had a knife or hammer or similar, the odds of both these women being dead by the time police arrived plummet to near zero.

This time last week, he was a law abiding gun owner. That’s kind of the problem. People were raising red flags all around the dude, but on paper he’s a 60 year old, affluent man living in a rich suburb with no criminal history. The law doesn’t presently have a way to handle this - you can’t punish someone who hasn’t done anything.

It only ended in 1973, so yes the first ~10 years of boomers would have had national service. Even worse: Those kids would have been drafted to go to Vietnam.

Imagine being the last kid called up. Born a day later, you’d be in the clear!
Imagine being that kid born a day later - missing out on the draft to Vietnam by a day!

Whether they were personally called up or not, they absolutely were not in favour of national service at the time.

My mind was blown about a year ago when I realised the band was called “Eagles”. Not “The Eagles”. Just Eagles. None of their albums/posters etc refer to themselves as The Eagles.

@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

Wow, I’m all in with these, except I’d have added Subnautica and I would have had Dishonored instead of Thief II. I Never played this game but I may fix that.

I went to a pretty spot by the river that night to see no aurora. Still, the skyline was nice enough that I didn’t mind the trip:

It was confirmed this afternoon that he had two handguns on the scene and was licensed as a collector for them.

I am personally surprised, I didn’t know that was possible. Meanwhile, there’s a petition going around by gun owners saying they don’t want tighter gun laws in the wake of this. I wonder whether there is an opposing petition saying it should not be legal to have a handgun at home?

Nath, to brisbane in Queensland slashes public transport fares to 50c in six-month trial
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

I think if you were commuting from Brisbane to Taiwan, the length of trip would come into play also. Perth to Taiwan would make more sense. It’s slightly closer and in the same time zone. 😁

To answer your unstated question: suburbs with rail links see those rail services enthusiastically used. So, usage is not the issue. It’s the upfront costs of establishing links, coupled with how long it takes - a decade or so. Our politics is just not well equipped for long term big infrastructure projects. The chances are high that the opposition will be in power to take the credit for the project’s completion, or they’ll blame your party for the bad project when they get in and the costs blow out. Or, they kill/maim the project anyway.

Nath, to asklemmy in What is your favorite song?
@Nath@aussie.zone avatar

Funny: so many Metallica fans hated this song with a passion that is holy. They called it a sellout to popular music just to make the charts and a complete deviation from their previous work.

So for this song to be the gateway to metal for you, is a real counter point to those angry fans.

It was Transformers and Lego. My Lego collection (which is tiny compared to theirs) was absorbed into their Lego years ago.
