PlantJam,

I just assume it’s people browsing all.

Floating Island Garden (lemmy.world)

Our retention pond in our neighborhood has a lot of algae and problematic plant growth due to the surrounding farms and lawn runoff, so we’re experimenting with a floating island to pull nutrients out before they can cause problems. This will also provide some interesting flowering plants, and more fish habitats....

PlantJam,

Would native riparian plants planted directly into the pond be an option?

Using Lemmy make me hate Windows (or any proprietary softwares) and finally make me fully switched to Linux

Just like migrating from Reddit to Lemmy it’s the same as migrating from Windows to Linux, there’s shortcomings and learning curve and the more I use Lemmy the more I hate about Windows, because unlike reddit Lemmy is open source and open source softwares communities is more popular than proprietary communities and people...

PlantJam,

Language highlighting is mostly why I use np++.

PlantJam,

Get what you’ll enjoy the most. Think about how often you’ll be using it to hunt turkies versus how often you’ll use it for anything else. Personally I would rather have a color I enjoy than something that is theoretically slightly better for the task.

New homeowner, just sorta winging it... (lemmy.world)

Having never owned a house or really had a yard of my own, I got pretty excited and decided to do some ad-hoc landscaping. Built some raised beds for vegetables, and just laying in some organic shaped in-ground beds for low water decorative plants. Gonna fill the rest in with gravel. Any pointers?

PlantJam,

Some of the no-mow native ground covers, like frogfruit if you’re in the southern US, actually get quite tall. We had a very wet spring and my frogfruit lawn got over twelve inches tall before I gave in and mowed it on the highest setting on my mower. I do have the same plant as filler in several beds, though, where it can get as tall as it wants.

The frogfruit would have eventually laid down a bit shorter once the extra moisture dried up, but it was getting to be quite the eye sore.

PlantJam,

Same! I had to stop when all the caterpillars came, though. I didn’t want to accidentally step on one of the ones that sting.

PlantJam,

Look into a sub irrigated planter. It’s just a planter with a water reservoir inside it that let’s the plants have consistent moisture. They only have to be refilled about once a week in the peak of summer (weeks at a time of 100+ F with no rain) and as little as once a month in more mild weather.

This site has a ton of good information about them: albopepper.com/sips.php

Here’s how I built mine: Build the planter to be about 24 inches tall and line it with a pond liner. Put a few pieces of corrugated drain pipe in the bottom. You are better off with these having a little bit of space between them than being packed too tightly. You then need to add an over flow drain at the top level of the pipes, and at the opposite corner add a pvc fill tube. The site I linked above explains this better, including some videos if that’s your preferred format. Cover the pipe with peat moss and pack the moss down under and between the pipes. Fill the rest of the planter with potting mix mixed with more peat moss and vermiculite/perlite. Do not add organics like compost or top soil. The mix should drain extremely well and feel light.

The guy mentions that the planter is not good for perennials due to the risk of freezing, but I have had very good success with native perennials in my planter. I have a native hibiscus as the centerpiece and it is going great.

The whole landscape process is a learning experience. Don’t expect to have your dream yard in one season, just aim to improve it a bit each year. Good luck!

PlantJam,

Have you played A Plague Tale (innocence, then requiem)? It’s one of the best story driven games I’ve ever played. It’s entirely linear, so plot urgency doesn’t feel artificial like it does in open world games.

PlantJam,

Sorry, the term HEB is already taken by Texas groceries.

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones,...

PlantJam,

Premium, aka so slippery it immediately goes in a case.

PlantJam,

Didn’t we already learn this lesson with Harley Davidson?

PlantJam,

It’s still way more awesome than cable ever was. Sure you can have all the services all at once and pay as much as a cable bill, or you can rotate your subscriptions and pay way less.

PlantJam,

Do you think trump would stop selling weapons to Israel?

OC It's out now! The prologue for my solo project, a roguelike tower defense, is live. Check it out. (store.steampowered.com)

About the game: A tower defense action roguelike where you control a single tower to fight against hordes of aliens coming from all directions. Pick your tower, equip up to 4 skills, and choose from a variety of traits and items to craft powerful builds that lead you to victory....

PlantJam,

Played a bit and enjoyed it. I really like the concept of the first skill having way less cool down. I found the scaling information a little hard to follow. For example, skill does 1 + 20% (icon) damage. This could be improved by also putting the formula in plain language, i.e. “20% of elemental damage plus 1”.

The auto skill feature could make this an excellent mobile game. I played with all my skills on auto attack and it worked quite well.

Some of the stats could use some more explanation. Element and support were particularly vague. Also the first skill cool down stat, I had a hard time figuring out how useful more of that stat would be since the tooltip still showed the skill’s original cool down.

Overall a really cool concept and implementation. Looking forward to playing the full release.

PlantJam,

For what it’s worth, you may not need a replacement piece at all. That piece should be able to slide over the bare cable, then insert the housing into the piece and the piece into the frame slot. Obviously I also don’t know what to call the piece.

PlantJam,

I just missed the part of your post about the part being lost, sorry about that.

PlantJam,

Can you speculate as to why the area is seemingly so desirable?

PlantJam,

That makes perfect sense, thank you.

PlantJam,

You can get a 1 TB for $80-100, or 2 TB for about $150-180. I would go with 1 TB minimum so you don’t have to micromanage the storage space.

My last ssd was 512 GB and even that would only let me keep a few games installed at a time. Much happier with 2 TB now.

Get Better Anaerobic Stats from Runs (lemmy.world)

I consistently have a lack of anaerobic load in my Garmin training load. I did a track run today trying to work on intense intervals. I was hoping to get to the end and have more anaerobic effect than aerobic. Is there something I should be doing differently in my runs? I was under the impression that the rest phase between run...

PlantJam,

Unless you’re really trying to train for something specific, I would just ignore it. I mainly cycle and I have enjoyed riding much more since I got rid of my bike computer and power meter. I still track rides with strava of course, but not having all the numbers during my ride let’s me just enjoy it. I also quit wearing my garmin watch on runs for similar reasons.

PlantJam,

Peacock disabled auto play previews for a while and it was great. But that was only because the whole screen would go black for a couple seconds as it tried to load the preview. They fixed that issue and now the previews are back. Mute button is doing a lot of great work these days.

PlantJam,

Note that the refund window is for it to be automatically approved. Beyond that it has to be manually reviewed.

PlantJam,

Could you possibly just detach the trellis from the fence and lean it away a bit? Talk to your neighbor and see if that might work. Removing the vines from the trellis will almost certainly damage them, and digging up the plants will cause even more damage.

PlantJam,

Leave to where, though? Personally I would relocate the worm to the outdoor garden where I have seen plenty of worm friends rather than risk a pet hurting him when he decides to relocate. If the potted plant was being kept outdoors I would leave the worm in.
