Starmer has changed his mind on almost everything. Now he needs to add PR to that list. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/14/starmer-has-changed-his-mind-on-almost-everything-now-he-needs-to-add-pr-to-that-list/

The government’s treatment of refugees makes international criminals of them all, in my opinion https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/12/the-governments-treatment-of-refugees-makes-international-criminals-of-them-all-in-my-opinion/

Why doesn’t Google’s new Bard AI service know what a Dutch Sandwich is? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/11/why-doesnt-googles-new-bard-ai-service-know-what-a-dutch-sandwich-is/. Weirdly, Google’s new AI service couldn’t tell me about a tax planning technique Google used, but ChatGPT could. Why is that?

It’s time the king gave up his royal exemptions from UK law https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/10/its-time-the-king-gave-up-his-royal-exemptions-from-uk-law/. Clive Lewis MP has been doing good work on the 160 or so royal exemptions from UK law, from tax onwards, and has a petition out asking the king to give these up. Might you support his cause?

The government’s plan to restrict the right of state employees to strike is another nail in the coffin of public services https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/09/the-governments-plan-to-restrict-the-right-of-state-employees-to-strike-is-another-nail-in-the-coffin-of-public-services/

I don’t believe the police apology to those members of Republic that they arrested https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/09/i-dont-believe-the-police-apology-to-those-members-of-republic-that-they-arrested/

@RichardJMurphy this apology from the Met has come about because no protest organisation will trust them again. That wrongful arrests happened within a day of giving the police draconian powers shows either the Tory government were incompetent and slapdash in how they rushed through legislation or actually it worked as intended: the UK now uses arbitrary detention to whisk people off the streets who disagree with Tory policy.

Labour have utterly misjudged the public mood on the right to protest https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/08/labour-have-utterly-misjudged-the-public-mood-on-the-right-to-protest/ Watch the video in my post

@craiggrannell @RichardJMurphy Yet they are so opposed to Scotland leaving...

@HighlandLawyer @RichardJMurphy Becuase they think they own Scotland rather than the union being (in theory…) a union of equals.

Yesterday saw the first reversal of the right to vote since 1832 https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/05/yesterday-saw-the-first-reversal-of-the-right-to-vote-since-1832/. The Tories removed the right to vote from many of the young, the old, the poorest and the most vulnerable yesterday. Those are the first they came for. Who will they come for next?

Would PR change who you voted for tomorrow? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023/05/03/would-pr-change-who-you-voted-for-tomorrow/. Campaigning for PR only makes sense if it would change how we vote. Would you vote differently tomorrow if we had PR? Three polls on my blog this morning seek to test that idea.
