“Metro” is used formally and is a formal designation used for things like statistical purposes. “Greater” is less formal and is used by the general public. I’ve heard Greater Vancouver far more than Metro Vancouver, but with those definitions, there are likely both.

You can also order HEPA filters for those furnaces that filter smoke well. And if you have enough of those filters, you can tape one to the front of a box fan for a makeshift air purifier.

The IRS is not something we should be comparing ourselves to. They’re incredibly understaffed.

It’s like a tech company saying it has too many employees because they compare themselves to the employee count at Twitter. Sure, the numbers are small there, but…

Women were talking about men in general. Some men took it as though they specifically were being targeted. If women don’t feel comfortable running alone at night because men can be predators, men in general should listen. When I hear that, I don’t take offence. I’m with you, I’ve never done anything. But we should be trying to figure out ways that women can feel more comfortable around men. Women shouldn’t need to feel like they have their guard up, and listening is the first step.

No. You’re not a source of terror. But people don’t know that. They just see a man. The issue isn’t with you, it’s with common experiences women have had with men.

There are so many bears that don’t hurt humans. But humans carry bear spray just in case the one they encounter is dangerous.

Correct answer. Sometimes I get things wrong, but I do my best to learn how I can do things to be more like this. Whatever label that is.

This is what people should be fearing. Studies have shown that when immigrants come in and “take jobs”, they pay taxes, and buy goods to create a life here, effectively replacing the job they took (since we need people who make beds for them to sleep in, food for them to eat, etc).

This is automation that’s ACTUALLY taking our jobs. This automation doesn’t pay taxes, and doesn’t replace the job it takes.

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

Absolutely it’s the best way forward. The catch is that it’s hard to calculate. If I write an app that saves someone 3 minutes of each work day, how much am I taxed on what I automated? We can just tax the rich, and assume they automate away everyone’s jobs.

It’s actually really good. It’s based off the book, and covers Snow and his interaction with the 10th hunger games.

I agree it could have been split in 2. I felt that way after I read the book.

Ah yes, Norway. The most oppressed nation on earth.

I think you have socialism confused with communism.

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

I didn’t want to confuse them. One small step of understanding at a time.

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

I get it. Generally people pushing for socialism aren’t pushing to be the USSR. Really what we mean is “Capitalism with really strong socialist safety nets”.

This should be for everyone. If we really want to cut omissions, reduce traffic, spend less on infrastructure, and make more walkable cities, we should tax cars more and use the funds to pay for free transit for all.

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

They found the same with library fines. The amounts weren’t deterring people from not returning their books. People generally return books. The issue was that those who were hit with fines either paid them off or couldn’t. And those who couldn’t, usually needed the books more than anyone. The same can be said with public transit.

If we really want to be a functioning economy where people can afford to both live and work, giving people a reliable, affordable means of transportation is one of the first steps.

Call centres exist because people can’t get the help they need by searching. Take away call centres, and you’re just making it more difficult for customers.

19,000 homes are permanently listed as short-term rentals, B.C. government says (www.cbc.ca)

A provincial rule to limit short-term rentals to a homeowner’s principal residence plus one secondary suite or accessory dwelling comes into force in British Columbia on May 1 in 60 communities, while 17 additional communities have chosen to opt into the rules, despite being exempt....

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

I wonder what would happen if we did the same to long term rentals. Would the lack of rentals hurt those who need to rent? Would the influx of homes for sale overcome that?

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

Right. This isn’t an issue with Microsoft, it’s an issue of getting a third party to do work when you have very different priorities. Microsoft’s priority is to make money, as all companies do. The governments priority is to have a safe and secure service. The two don’t match, so the government should have created and maintained a safe and secure service.

The biggest issue is that people don’t want the government to over-spend on anything, so they don’t want the government to pay tech people tech salaries. So even if they did just do it themselves, you can’t trust it’s done by the best people because it’s only done by those who are willing to work at 30% of the pay.

So the issue isn’t really with Microsoft, it’s with the government for not being aware of priorities, and not being willing to pay for what’s important.

TheRaven,
@TheRaven@lemmy.ca avatar

You’re not wrong. If I said anything that made it seem like those who get paid less are worse developers, that’s on me. But there are many who are amazing developers who can’t take a government job because the pay is too low. It seems odd to rule those people out. If we’re fighting for better pay for everyone, government jobs should set an example.

Competition is good for consumers. Also, some of these are open source, and those are best for consumers. I say… MORE!

It’s also easier to give them all the candy they can eat, than to deal with your kid constantly wanting candy. Doesn’t make it healthy.
