Thorny_Insight,

Swordfish? Interesting… What’s that like?

Thorny_Insight,

“Lie”

It’s a theory. A plausible but unlikely one. Just like it was unlikely that the first atomic bomb would set the atmosphere on fire - but possible. I think that events with consequences of this magnitude deserves some consideration. I doubt humans are anywhere even near the far end of the intelligence spectrum and only a human is stupid enough to think that something that is would not posses any potential danger to us.

Thorny_Insight,

I was just thinking yesterday what car I would get if I had infinite money and while I’m sure such one probably exists I couldn’t came up with one that I’d like better than my -07 Nissan Navara. I mean yeah I would ofcourse do a total overhaul on it and add a bunch of offroad accessories and such but the truck itself basically has everything I need and switching to a newer one would just add stuff I dont want.

I like cars and trucks but I’m extremely uninterested in most of the new ones. Something similar happened with them as with smartphones when they turned from tools into fashion accessories you use to show off to your friends. Can’t we just have ones that are decent looking and come with the basic necesary features and nothing more? I want it simple, reliable and easy to fix. I don’t want a computer on wheels.

Thorny_Insight,

Buying a new car never really made sense to me even when you could afford it. 2 - 3 year old model is effectively brand new but a lot cheaper. Why pay more if you can pay less?

It’s a spectrum. A pedal-assist electric bicycle and a Surron are both considered “e-bikes” yet they’re wildly different with the other effectively being a motorbike. In europe the vast majority of e-bikes are pedal assist with a 250W motor and maximum speed of 25kph (15mph)

EDIT: Pedal assist (pedelec) means the motor only runs when you’re pedaling and usually the harder you pedal the more it assists but it cuts off at 25kph and if you want to go faster it’s muscle power only from there on.

Thorny_Insight,

I used to never wear a helmet when commuting to school etc. but since I started mountain biking getting one seemed like a no-brainer and now it’s like putting on my seatbelt. Riding without a helmet feels wildly irresponsible and I even put it on when doing a test-drive around the block after having done some maintenance.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

Jokes on them. I endlessly scroll on my computer while my smartphone mostly just acts as a phone/music player/navigation device.

Thorny_Insight,

I don’t think it’s a reason to not go ahead with it either but then again it’s not too far off from the similar argument about replacing actors/knowledge workers with AI or factory workers/truck drivers with automation. It is true that while it may provide better and even cheaper product it does also come with a loss of work for ton of people.

Thorny_Insight,

If Hamas wasn’t using their own population as human shields and shooting rockets from next to the refugee camps then perhaps there would be no need for it. I also find it quite ironic how they’re yet again criticized for bombing civilians while there’s a perfect example right there of to which lenghts they’re going to warn them beforehand. I doubt Hamas did that before shooting rockets at the aid delivery corridor a few days back. Again, 350 meters from a civilian campsite.

what's a good way to stick a laser leveler to the wall?

I have a laser level that I’d like to use for lining up pictures on my wall. I’m doing this by myself otherwise I just have someone else hold it. It has a couple holes in it that look like maybe you could use screws or nails and I’d rather not have to put holes in the wall to do this. Any suggestions?

Thorny_Insight,

A tripod is what I use. Laser levels have the same threads in them than cameras do. There’s also stands for them which you pin between the floor and ceiling and can then place the laser at any height aswell as wall-mounts with magnets and stuff but all this seems a bit excessive for hanging a picture. Perhaps use a bubble level and a measuring tape instead?

Thorny_Insight,

I’d love to drive my truck in places I’m not allowed to. I would do urban offroading, drive on private land and inside malls and stuff.

Maybe I’d also find an abandoned building or two and set them on fire but first I would smash all the windows. Actually now that I think about it, I’d make molotov cocktails and set all kinds of things on fire.

I would also like to try if I could fall a radio mast by cutting the guide wires with an battery powered angle grinder. This is one of the things I’ve always wondered when looking at these masts and thought there’s no way it could be that easy.

Maybe I’d finish my day by raiding a hardware store and stealing all the tools I don’t already have and probably one or two other things aswell.

Yeah if the law (or fear of god) is the only thing that prevents one from doing horrible things, then they’re probably not the most balanced person to begin with.

Thorny_Insight,

Yeah but would that be enought to make the entire tower fall if you cut all of them on the one side. Seems like it would but also seems like something they would take into account when designing these as that would be quite easy to sabotage and how’s anyone even going to catch you since they’re usually located in the middle of forest.

Thorny_Insight,

This is how I think about social media in general. It’s a spectrum from mostly fake to all fake. Even the least fake profiles still only show the good parts of their life and unedited photos are still hand-picked from a bunch of other ones they don’t want people to see.

Hell even my own Pixelfed feed which is 100% landscape photography is all more or less fake. I take hundreds of photos and only publish one or two of the best ones and even those are heavily edited. It gives a totally false impression of how good of an photographer I really am.

Thorny_Insight,

If it’s someone I’m never going to meet either way then it doesn’t matter if they’re real or not. What matters is the quality of content.

Thorny_Insight,

It’s oddly common vehicle even where I live and they all look the same, just different color. At a quick glance it’s hard to even tell Model S, 3 and Y from eachother.

Thorny_Insight,

Steve Jobs was widely known as a huge asshole aswell but I think it’s pretty undeniable that he was also a genious. I think the same applies to Elon. He pretty much single handedly popularized electric vehicles and the innovation he’s pushing on rocket technology and satellite internet is quite amazing especially considering it’s all coming from a single man. I wish he’d get off social media and focus on what matters. I still hope that he succeeds though, because the world benefits from it.

It seems quite common that exceptional people like him more often than not come with their not so positive personality quirks and he’s no exception here.

Thorny_Insight,

Maybe one day instead of just jokes and downvotes someone actually tells me what I’m wrong about.

Thorny_Insight,

Ad-hominem seems to be the most common argument aganst my views on this indeed.

Thorny_Insight,

Sure, but that’s true with all other successful people aswell. There’s always a team of competent professionals behind them. However I think it’s still true to say that you could pick any individual from that team and replace them with someone else with no significant change to the end product but once you remove the head figure the innovation is very likely going to stop right there.

Thorny_Insight,

I don’t really have an opinion it and I haven’t been following the changes there very closely. From my personal point of view I haven’t noticed much of a change but perhaps I’m not the most typical twitter user to begin with. The niche section of it that I hang in has pretty much left unchanged.

I liked what he said of it in the beginning about how in a well-balanced social media platform the left and the right should be equally unsatisfied but that doesn’t seem to have been the case here as it seems to be almost exclusively the left that’s abandoning the platform. I’m definitely noticing a strong right-wing bias in the recommended content that occasionally finds it’s way into my non-political feed there.

Thorny_Insight,

Yeah. XCover 6Pro is the only device that met my requirements and is the one I went with.

Thorny_Insight,

I believe in voting with your wallet. Giving money to companies that practice anti-consumer behaviour sends them the signal that you’re okay with what they’re doing. I’m not okay with it so I’m sticking to my principles.

I never bought a device with non-removable battery either and now thanks to EU it seems that I don’t ever need to either.

I also bought an older model MacBook because it had a better keyboard aswell as HDMI port and SD-card reader. Now the newest models have them again because enough people like me refused to buy the inferior models.
